📍 Warwick Castle, Warwick, Warwickshire, CV34 6AU.

Warwick Castle, an iconic symbol of England's rich history, stands majestically on the banks of the River Avon in Warwickshire. Originally constructed by William the Conqueror in 1068, the castle has played a pivotal role in the nation's medieval and modern history.

Initially built as a wooden motte-and-bailey structure, Warwick Castle was intended to protect the Norman conquest's interests in the region. By the 12th century, it was rebuilt in stone, becoming a formidable stronghold. The castle witnessed significant historical events, including the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle was a hub of political intrigue and military strategy. It was owned by prominent figures such as the powerful Beauchamp family and later the Greville family, who were granted the title of Earls of Warwick. The Greville family transformed the castle from a military fortress into a stately home during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

Warwick Castle's architecture showcases various styles, reflecting its long history. The imposing gatehouse, the iconic Caesar's Tower, and the elegant Great Hall are just a few highlights. The castle's defenses include massive walls, towers, and a dry moat, demonstrating medieval military architecture's ingenuity. The interiors, adorned with lavish furnishings and artworks, offer a glimpse into the aristocratic lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Today, Warwick Castle is a premier tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the globe. Owned by the Merlin Entertainments Group since 2007, the castle has been transformed into an interactive and educational experience. Guests can explore the castle's grand rooms, including the State Rooms and the Kingmaker Exhibit, which brings to life the Earl of Warwick's preparations for battle during the Wars of the Roses.

The castle grounds feature beautifully landscaped gardens, including the Peacock Garden and Victorian Rose Garden. The picturesque setting provides a perfect backdrop for seasonal events and medieval reenactments.

📍 Bracebridge Pumping Station, High Hoe Road, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, S80 2DR

Dominating the local landscape since construction in 1881, the Bracebridge Pumping Station was a fundamental part of Worksop's new sewage system following a cholera epidemic. It utilised two steam-driven, coal fired beam engines to pump sewage to the effluent processing facility at 400,000 gallons every 12 hours.

Like many Victorian pumping stations it was designed in an Italian Romanesque style, which included ornate cast-iron columns and a spiral staircase. The plant eventually shut with the building of a new sewage treatment works at Kilton. All that remains is the empty pumping house, the boiler house chimney and a couple of treatment tanks. The boiler house itself was demolished sometime after 1970.

Now Grade II listed and boasting a new roof, planning permission was granted in 2006 to convert the structure into 24 residential apartments, but as of today, work into this project does not appear to have begun.

📍 The Peel Monument, Ramsbotton, Bury, Greater Manchester, BL8 4NR

The Peel Monument, also known as Peel Tower or Holcombe Tower, is one of two monuments erected in the area in memory of Sir Robert Peel, a former Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and founder of the Metropolitan Police Service, who was born in the nearby town of Bury, Greater Manchester.

After Peel's death in 1850 there was a campaign to erect a statue in Bury and a monument at the top of Harcles Hill in nearby Holcombe. A monuments committee was convened and the tower was completed in 1852, built at a cost of £1000, raised through a public appeal.

The gritstone monument is 128 feet tall (39 metres) and sits upon top of Harcles Hill, also know as Holcombe Hill, towering 1100 feet (335 metres) above the nearby villages of Holcombe and Ramsbottom. The location offers spectacular views across the West Pennines, the town of Bury and the city of Manchester.

Look out for the flag flying from the top of the tower, usually one Sunday a month, indicating that it is open to the public to ascend its internal 171 step iron staircase to enjoy the view from the top.
