We recently had four unfortunate gentlemen visit the UK on their motorcycles, only for their bikes to be stolen while they were on holiday.

Thankfully, the bikes were recovered and we were able to get them running again. Unfortunately, one of the Triumph Scrambler 400 X motorcycles had been left in a state of disrepair and required a complete new lockset.

Having already been told that they were looking at 3–4 weeks workshop lead time and no parts available elsewhere, it was looking increasingly unlikely that they would be able to make their journey home as planned.

They were advised to give Midlands Motorcycle Services a call and we were more than happy to help.

Within 24 hours, we had located the required parts, had them delivered, fitted and programmed The Triumph 400x was back up and running and, most importantly, back in the hands of its owner.

The result? Four very relieved riders who can now make their ferry crossing tomorrow morning and head back home to the Netherlands. 🇳🇱

We wish all a safe journey home and would like to

The colour looks absolutely amazing in person and truly complements this customer’s personal build, giving the bike a completely unique look. It’s always great to see a customer’s vision come together and the finished result on this one is something special.

Another Triumph back through the workshop !

This Triumph Daytona 675 has just had its 12K service completed here at Midlands Motorcycle Services.

As part of the job, we gave the bike the attention it deserved reattached the coolant expansion tank and also removed the excessive amount of white grease that had been sprayed absolutely everywhere during previous services! There’s lubricating components where required… and then there’s spraying it over virtually every part of the bike!

Now fully serviced, cleaned up and ready to get back on the road looking and performing as it should.

At Midlands Motorcycle Services, we don’t just tick boxes — we take pride in inspecting the whole motorcycle and doing the job properly.

Today we completed a 12,000 mile service on this BMW R1250RS Triple Black.

The valve clearances was within the specification range and there was no abnormal wear found to the camshaft lobes, that can sometimes be found on these 1250 Boxer engines.

Air Gap Over Volume

Another example of why correct fork servicing is about much more than simply replacing the seals and filling with oil.

This fork had recently had a fork seal replaced at another establishment, but within just a few days the new seal had failed and was leaking heavily.

Once we stripped it down, the cause became very clear.

The fork had been filled completely to the top with fork fluid, leaving effectively no air gap.

The air gap inside a fork is absolutely critical. It isn’t simply a case of measuring a volume of fork oil and pouring it in. The air gap is part of the fork’s operating characteristics and must be set to the correct specification, with the fork compressed and the appropriate components removed as required by the manufacturer’s procedure.

With no sufficient air gap, the trapped air cannot provide the intended compression cushion as the fork operates. This can create excessive pressure inside the fork, particularly under heavy compression, placing unnecessary load on the fork seals and potentially causing premature seal failure.

In this case, the incorrect oil level appears to have resulted in the new seal failing just days after installation.

Thankfully, the owner had private motorcycle warranty cover, so the repair has been covered under their warranty.

At Midlands Motorcycle Services, we take the time to measure and set things correctly rather than relying on guesswork.

Because when it comes to suspension, the details matter !

When a “service” doesn’t solve the problem…

This Triumph Tiger 800 XRT came to us after a number of issues appeared immediately following a service carried out elsewhere — and unfortunately, the same problems were still present, along with a few new ones.

The customer reported:

Cam chain rattle
Poor idle
Valve train noise
Engine management light illuminated
Cruise control not working

We received the bike and immediately carried out a full diagnostic test.

Within minutes, we had found one of the problems.

The MAP sensor had been left unplugged when the air filter had previously been changed.

This creates a fault within the 5V reference system, which in turn disables the cruise control as a safety feature.

But that wasn’t the only issue…

Investigating the valve train noise

The cam chain tensioner was clearly no longer doing its job correctly. Given the mileage, we recommended replacing the cam chain, guides and tensioner as the correct course of action rather than simply replacing the tensioner.

The bike had also supposedly been booked elsewhere for its valve clearance inspection.

Once we removed the fuel tank, it became immediately apparent that this had not been carried out.

From the outside, there were still many miles worth of dirt and debris sitting around the cam cover, along with the original cam cover seal.

Once the cam cover was removed, the problem became even clearer.

The cam chain had stretched sufficiently to cause the engine timing to become misaligned.

We first reset the timing before measuring the valve clearances. This allows us to obtain the most accurate measurements possible.

And the results?

All six inlet valve clearances were out of specification.

All six shims were replaced to bring the clearances back to their correct nominal specification.

With the new cam chain, guides, tensioner and shims fitted, the timing correctly set and the MAP sensor fault rectified, the Tiger was finally running exactly as it should.

Another bike properly diagnosed, repaired and, most importantly, another very happy customer.

This is exactly why correct diagnostic procedures and manufacturer-specified service checks matter.

At Midlands Motorcycle Services, we don’t just service the bike — we inspect, diagnose and investigate the reasons behind any problems.

A quick reflection from the past couple of weeks…

Firstly, thank you. The demand and workload at Midlands Motorcycle Services has been absolutely overwhelming, and we genuinely couldn’t be more grateful for the continued support from our customers.

However, the growth has reached a point where we’ve had to restructure some of our workshop rules so we can focus on what we do best — providing the highest standard of motorcycle servicing and repairs.

To help us manage the workload and keep the quality of our work where we want it to be, please take note of the following:

1️⃣ No loose-wheel tyre fitting
We simply don’t have the capacity to accommodate quick, drop-in tyre fitting jobs.

2️⃣ We cannot fit tyres supplied by customers
These are often the types of jobs customers understandably want doing immediately, but with our current workload, we simply cannot fulfil that expectation.

3️⃣ We cannot fit customer-supplied parts
Unfortunately, we’ve learnt this one the hard way. The quality of some parts purchased through the famous auction sites can vary considerably, and we’re not prepared to fit components that don’t meet the standard we are comfortable putting the MMS name to.

We will only fit genuine parts or selected aftermarket components from manufacturers and brands that we know, trust and have confidence in. Quality and reliability will always come first.

A little patience goes a long way ❤️

Please remember that we are a family-run business, currently booking around 4–6 weeks ahead, with an ever-growing customer base of over 4,000 riders.

We have just one receptionist dealing with the phones, emails, bookings and day-to-day enquiries from all of those customers.

We always aim to answer the phone as quickly as possible, but sometimes — quite simply — it’s impossible to get to every call immediately.

If you can’t get through, please leave us a voicemail with your name, contact number and enquiry, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Alternatively, send us an email enquiry and we’ll respond as soon as possible.

We really do appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding and continued support.

The growth of MMS has been incredible, and none of it would be possible without you.

Thank you for supporting our family-run business. 🏍️🔧
