Things are changing a bit at ArTek - but it doesn't really affect you, happily!

ArTek is now officially ArTek Shetland Ltd, having recently become incorporated!

Why - well I've just started a new role in Sullom Voe, and a new challenge.

I am now working as a Mechanical Comissioning Technician, working to finalise the new stabilisation facility onsite, to deliver over to Enquest and hopefully help increase the lifespan of site.

I'll still be working a 2 on 2 off rota, so will have availability for work still, but otherwise it's business as usual.

More expensive tools doesn't always mean better, sometimes.

So had a health check to do, and decided to break out the compression tester. My old tester was leaking past the quick connect fitting, and was just an ebay cheapo from many moons ago. Also had a cheap leakdown tester and didn't trust the gauges.

Decided now is the time for a proper kit. A brand new Sealey diesel and petrol compression tester and leakdown tester. Amazing!

Until, on the 2nd cylinder, it blows the fitting right off the hose. This kit is able, going by the gauge, to handle 700psi. This blew off at about 140psi. Disaster.

Of course, my heart sank, the adapter was sitting pretty in the spark plug hole. A few choice words and some deep breath later, got to work and eventually extracted the adapter.

Now to wait on the warranty, ans will forever remember this moment when I use this kit šŸ˜…

Slowly getting things organised in the workshop.

Still have toolboxes and tools to take out here, and furniture to get in the house or to Cope, but the workshop is finally looking better!

I might be biased here, but i think we might have the sweetest peerie apprentice in the world šŸ¤

Some jobs put up more of a fight than others.

VW Passat in for a steering rack replacement, driver side seals blown well and truly!

Awkward access, seized track rod ends and typical Shetland weathering makes it bigger job than it looks in the photos.

Old rack out, replacement fitted, new track rod ends fitted, power steering system bled and everything back together and a clean up afterwards.

Another one back on the road.

Looking like my availability will be opening up!

Which means more time to work on cars, boats, plant, or whatever else you might need done. Diagnostics, repairs, fabrication, get in touch whatever it is šŸ›

Have availability this weekend and more onwards.

The S6 investigation continues…

Front end off and access starting to get a little better.

Working our way deeper into the engine now, dealing with the original noise as well as a few preventative jobs that make sense while it’s this far apart.

The diagnosis continues, and the results don't get any better 🫣

Used it as a chance to get using the new xtool, very capable machine! This is only a tiny little fraction of what it can do.

As for the S6, well, you can hear she isn't healthy šŸ¤’

Started stripping her down the other night, it's time to bite the bullet and inspect the timing gear.

Updates to come as we get deeper into this, and get her back to her best, ready for selling.

The diagnosis is underway šŸ”

A couple of different jobs tackled the other night.

First up, a new battery health monitoring pigtail soldered in to replace the damaged wiring and get that circuit back as it should be.

Then onto the engine fault. I’ve removed and swapped the exhaust cam phaser solenoids from side to side. The idea is fairly simple, if the fault moves with the solenoid, we’ve likely found the culprit.
If it stays where it is, we know to start looking deeper into that side of the engine.

Next step is to finally break out the new XTOOL scanner, plug it in and having a proper look at the live data and fault information.

I might stick up a short video while I’m doing it, showing some of what the scanner can actually do beyond just reading and clearing fault codes.

Would that be something people would be interested in seeing?

A few of the diagnostic tools we've been putting together for ArTek šŸ”§

The XTOOL ip919 pro diagnostic scanner, used to read fault codes, view live data and carry out more in-depth checks on the vehicle’s systems. A very powerful tool!

The Sealey multimeter and uni-t clamp meter are for electrical testing, checking things like voltage, resistance, current draw, wire breaks and charging faults.

The test lights are a quick but very useful way of checking whether a circuit actually has power and can carry a load, rather than just relying on a fault code.

And the TOPDON battery tester is for checking battery condition and helping assess starting and charging system problems, and have just used to find our S6 battery health is very poor.

Modern diagnostics is often less about simply reading a code and more about testing what’s actually happening before replacing anything.

Plenty other leads, back probes adapters and other bits and pieces to allow us to do a range of invasive and non invasive testing

Still adding to the setup, but it’s coming together nicely.
