Saturday evening was a trip to B-ROLL for their meet at Great Northern Classics
I had planned to take the Alfa, but with potentially iffy weather, a car not really built for motorway cruising and 70s technology lhd headlights, I decided to give the compact a scrub and take that instead for what may be the last national event of the year. Quite fitting as it was also the car which opened show season with me at Gaydon back in April.
I’m glad I’ve managed to get to so many great events this year and this one was no exception, relaxed, friendly and a great selection of cars. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for future events.

Another 200+ miles, another trip up north, and another drama free weekend in the old Alfa.

The Sunday Drivers Club event at Sheffield aero club was well worth the trip. It felt like a small local show, but the numbers of and quality of vehicles were something else. That they could pack a field that full with minimal delays is outstanding work from all involved.

I appreciate everyone who came to have a look around or chat about the car, I love taking it to different events just to show people something they might not have seen before.

As usual, I forgot to take any decent photos of my own car 😄

I don’t leave the bonnet up to show off or try and impress anyone, I do it because I’m a nerd and love seeing interesting and unusual things and different engineering solutions, and hope others may be the same.
I expect virtually all alfasuds had evaporated and disappeared from the roads before the majority of people at yesterdays show were even born and probably have no idea what this funny little car, which looks like a regular hatchback but isn’t a hatch, is.

With another 300 miles under the wheels this weekend we took a trip up north along the A1(M) to Hodsock Priory just outside Worksop for a Reyt posh doo. A car show like no other I’ve ever been to, put on by Sunday Drivers Club retropower
It takes a lot to get me out of jeans and a Tshirt, and I’ll admit to being rather apprehensive, but it was wonderful to see so many people making an effort to join in.
A stunning setting, a great selection of vehicles with something to appeal to all tastes, a friendly, respectful and enthusiastic crowd and delicious pizza too!
I felt honoured to be given a display place, and very much hope to come back if there’s another event next year. Thank you to all involved.

It seems like the UK is having a decent summer, and with Alfred becoming the ‘show’ car, the compact has become the regular daily driver.

Luckily the AC works well and 30C+ temps have been no issue, although I would LOVE powered rear vent windows!

Variety.

A bit of a nothing post, but had these three lined up and thought it worthy of a quick snap.
Other than running on petrol, having longitudinally mounted engines and having four wheels there’s not much else in common.
Fwd, rwd, 4wd.
Flat 4, inline 4, v8.
4 door saloon, 3 door hatch, 5 door suv
14”, 17”, 20”
80s (just), 90s, 2000s

I don’t have a favourite, it depends on the mood, the journey and the occasion, I enjoy all three in completely different ways.

A bit of an Alfasud update.
I don’t think I’d driven it since the Vengaworld event back in early October. Last winter was long and wet.
At some point late last year a random eBay find was an ultra rare Alquati twin carb conversion manifold for single carb engines. On these it’s not as easy as stealing the setup off a later Ti, there are various cooling system changes and different cylinder heads. Way more involved than I wanted to get.
The manifold came bare, so some cheapo Chinese Weber idf clones were purchased. I’ve heard modern genuine Webers don’t have great quality control, so paying 7x as much doesn’t guarantee they’ll work any better!
I then spent several dark evenings figuring out a linkage setup that would retain the original throttle cable and not need any other engine bay modifications.
I finally got it fired up one evening last week, but couldn’t run it for long as the cooling system was still drained. After eventually receiving the correct inlet manifold gaskets ( coolant flows through the manifold to each of the heads) I could replumb and refill the cooling system. Today I could let it run properly and get warm.
A quick check that all the lights still worked, and I was off on a couple of mile test drive.
The induction roar is crazy, sounds like a proper oldschool rally car 😂 I don’t think it’s actually any quicker, but it definitely sounds it!
A once over and check for leaks, then back out to top the tank with fresh fuel and it all seems to be behaving.
It’s good to have old Alfred back in action.

I hadn’t planned on going back to this look, but a pair of only just legal tyres, plus finding a screw in one of the good ones meant the centrelocks have been temporarily retired. As I’d put a new pair on these rear wheels back in the autumn I thought I’d have a swap.

This time in on 8in all round, the 9s looked good but 8s drive better and means I can swap them around.

They seem to suit the retro 90s theme of the car, and I think they’re scrubbed in now after a run down to weekender at goodwood!

April recap, it seems we’ve been blessed with some decent weather, finished off a few odd jobs including subframe bushes and a new windscreen on the X5, 28 year old 318Ti and 21 year old 4.8is both went through the mot at the first attempt with no issues.
