The Apollo 11 mission still teaches engineers something today.

When people think about Apollo 11, they usually think of the moon landing. Engineers, however, tend to think about something else: Precision.

Thousands of individual components had to work together exactly as intended. Not because they were perfect. It was because every decision reduced uncertainty.

This same mindset still exists in engineering today.

Whether you're designing a product, success usually comes from solving hundreds of small problems before they become one big one.

Every time you remove material, you're changing something else. It might affect the strength, how it's manufactured, how long it lasts, or even how much it costs to produce.

That's why lightweight design is usually a balancing act rather than a weight-saving exercise.

We recently had exactly that challenge while developing a rugged handheld inspection device for the aerospace industry. The product needed to be compact and comfortable to use, but it also had to cope with demanding environments where reliability couldn't be compromised.

Making something lighter is easy. Making it lighter without sacrificing everything else is where the engineering starts.

Every experienced engineer started by not knowing the answer.

World Youth Skills Day is a good reminder that nobody starts their career knowing everything.

Every experienced engineer was once the person asking questions and making mistakes while learning from those around them.

Engineering isn't just about technical knowledge. It's about curiosity. It's about questioning why something failed or worked, and how it could be improved.

The industry needs more people willing to ask these questions. After all, today's apprentices and graduates will be solving tomorrow's engineering challenges.

What is one of the biggest lessons I've learnt in product development?

It's usually harder to understand the problem than it is to design the solution.

It's tempting to jump straight into creating sketches, CAD models or prototypes because it feels like you're making progress.

However, if the problem hasn't been properly understood, every subsequent decision becomes much harder. Good product development doesn't start with CAD. It starts with understanding.

Looking for practical engineering insights?

Every project teaches something.

That's why we regularly share the engineering thinking behind the products we help develop.

From medical devices and fluidics systems to aviation products and consumer goods, our blogs explore the challenges, trade-offs, and engineering decisions that happen long before products reach the market.

If you're involved in product development, there's plenty to explore here: https://www.cambridge-dt.com/news

We have been working on some very exciting projects in recent months, which we have shared on our website.

With more case studies to come, now is the perfect time to find out more about what we do best: providing excellent, full-cycle product design and development.

Good product design is often about removing things.

Removing friction.
Removing confusion.
Removing decisions users never wanted to make in the first place.

Because every extra feature, button or step increases complexity somewhere.

Usually quietly. The difficult part is knowing what actually matters to the user and what only matters internally to the team building it.

That’s why good design can feel deceptively simple from the outside. A lot of hard decisions are usually hiding underneath it.

One thing digital engineering workflows are improving massively?

Visibility. Not just of the product itself, but of the problems.

The earlier teams can identify clashes, manufacturing issues, or performance risks, the less expensive product development becomes later on.

That’s where digital workflows are genuinely changing engineering. Not by replacing experience. But by helping experienced teams make better decisions earlier.

Our belief that the best designs come from listening, asking the right questions, and combining expertise across disciplines has been reinforced by every project we have worked on.

And we’re just getting started!
