1966 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk I

Colin Chapman’s Lotus and Ford of England collaborated to create this lightweight racing saloon that bridged motorsport ambitions with street legality. The partnership transformed the standard Cortina GT through extensive weight reduction (aluminum doors, hood, and trunk lid), distinctive quarter bumpers replacing the full-width front piece, and a lowered suspension configuration tuned by Lotus.

Power came from a 1,558cc DOHC inline-four producing approximately 105-115 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. Harry Mundy designed the twin-cam head while Cosworth assisted in development, adapting it to Ford’s Kent engine block. A close-ratio four-speed manual transmission (shared with the Lotus Elan) managed power delivery to the rear wheels.

Production spanned from early 1963 through late 1966, yielding roughly 2,894 units. Most were finished in Ermine White with Sherwood Green side stripes, a color scheme that became iconic. Jim Clark famously drove a Lotus Cortina to the 1964 British Saloon Car Championship title.

The interior featured bucket seats and a wood-rimmed steering wheel, reflecting its competition pedigree. The car’s blend of performance, handling, and everyday usability cemented its status as one of the defining sports sedans of the 1960s.
