Night-time driving is something I want learners to feel properly prepared for, not just something they experience after passing.

I always think: if this was my child, what would I want them to know before I put them on the road?

At night, your view changes. Pedestrians, cyclists and animals can be much harder to see, and hazards can seem to appear from nowhere.

Your speed needs to match what you can actually see. Look well ahead and make sure you can stop safely within the distance you know is clear.

And if you see a sign with a yellow background, take notice. It marks a location where someone has been killed or seriously injured.

Slow down. Give yourself time. Get home safely.

That’s why so many crashes happen close to home, on the roads we know best. Familiar doesn’t mean safe. It means your brain has stopped looking properly.

Here’s how to keep it switched on:

🔍 Play “what’s different today?” – A parked van, a bin out, a cyclist you didn’t expect. Actively hunt for the one thing that’s changed.

🗣️ Commentary drive – Say out loud what you see and what you’re planning. “Junction ahead, checking mirrors, car pulling out on the left.” It feels daft but it works.

🎯 Give yourself a mission – Count the hazards, spot every “give way” sign, name every road you pass. A small task keeps your focus where it should be.

👀 Move your eyes – Autopilot narrows your vision. Deliberately look far ahead, check mirrors, and scan the pavements.

📵 Ditch the distractions – Familiar roads are exactly where people reach for the phone or turn up the radio. Don’t.

🔁 Change your route – Taking a slightly different way home breaks the pattern and wakes your brain up.

Learner or lifelong driver, the road doesn’t care how many times you’ve driven it. Stay curious, stay alert.
