(Strap in its a long one) Yesterday's test was a super special one, a really proud moment. I knew Breanna a little before we started having lessons, but I had no idea how nervous she was about getting behind the wheel. Like, so nervous that if you looked up "anxious driver" in a dictionary, it should have been a picture of Breanna. But I knew from that first day there was so much driving ability inside her, if we could get her to believe in herself. She had the ability, but absolutely no confidence.
Yesterday, she went and absolutely smashed her driving test in Boston, first time, with just 5 driver faults. A heck of a tricky route too involving multiple lane changes, several busy roundabouts, and "that" hill start at the sluice bridge behind Asda that has fended off many a test candidate over the years. I am so so proud of Breanna, she cried a bit, i'd be lying if said there wasn't a little tear myself as she was getting her examiners debrief.
I wasn't totally sure Breanna would come back for round two after her first lesson but she did, and she showed up and gave it her all. I think for a long time both of us couldn't imagine a day where she would be willing to go to the test centre and do a driving test. I remember our second lesson clear as day going around a loop of tiny residential roads and Breanna said to me "I think this is fast enough now. I don't think I'll ever want to go faster than this" and I looked over at the speedometer which was reading 11mph and chuckled. We went from that, needing a lot of support and taking lots of breaks - to lane changes, dual carriageways, complex roundabouts and driving independently with no help needed from me.
It's been a heck of a journey, I told Breanna from day one I was there for her and I believed she could do it and we will get her licence, even if she couldn't see it herself yet. There's been a lot of frustration, tears, and laughs from both of us and I will miss our lessons very much. But I'd much rather see her go off and reach her potential and achieve all she can with that licence in hand. Finally a big thankyou and well done to Breanna's mum, and her mum's partner, both of whom have spent a lot of time in the last few weeks getting Breanna some private driving practice and getting her more comfortable being out on the road around other road users, which I feel made a big difference to getting that result yesterday.
