This oneโ€™s running larger 390cc injectors, so it needed a proper custom calibration to scale them in correctly โ€” no shortcuts here ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

The car came to us previously tuned, but the owner wasnโ€™t happy with how it drove. So we wiped the slate clean and started fresh.

After loading a base file and taking some data logs, it was obvious this Abarth wasnโ€™t happyโ€ฆ

โŒ Misfiring
โŒ Boost lag
โŒ Fuelling all over the place

Time to dig deeper ๐Ÿง

First up โ€” smoke test.
Straight away we found the issueโ€ฆ the fuel pressure regulator had been left disconnected ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Thatโ€™s a big problemโ—

The FPR is there to increase fuel pressure in line with boost. Without it? The car runs lean under boost โ€” and thatโ€™s how you end up with melted internals ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Next, we checked the actuator. We were meant to be fitting an uprated unit (wrong one sent out ๐Ÿ‘Ž), but after testing it, we adjusted the preload to sharpen up response and reduce boost lag ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

With everything sorted, we got back into the mapping.

A few revisions later andโ€ฆ

โœ… Boosting exactly as it should
โœ… Fuelling dialled in perfectly
โœ… Driving properly

Danny won't know this, but 6 years ago he was my first proper customer outside my friends and family. Since then we have tuned multiple vehicles for his friends and family, and recently came out to see him again - this time with his mighty M135i ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

He bought the car already tuned, but annoyingly BMW wiped the calibration while working on it ๐Ÿ™„ he then installed a generic stage 2 from MHD, but wasn't convinced it was delivering peak performance ๐Ÿ“‰

We started by logging data to see exactly what was going on. While the map was safe, it was extremely weak for a โ€œStage 2โ€ setup, producing just over 1 bar of boost. From there, we started developing our own bespoke Stage 2 calibration. After some testing and a couple of revisions, we were safely achieving around 1.2 bar at peak ๐Ÿ“ˆ with significantly improved fueling and ignition too ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

Based on airflow calculations, I estimate the car is making around 430hp. But Danny later messaged to say he lined it up against another M135i that was dynoโ€™d at 438hp โ€” and his was quicker ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’ฅ

After a quick call, we offered to carry out a ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฅ ๐™˜๐™๐™š๐™˜๐™  to see whether everything was as it should be. On arrival, we took a full ECU read to analyse the calibration and logged live data to assess real-world performance ๐Ÿ“ˆ and it didnโ€™t take long to see there was ๐™จ๐™ž๐™œ๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™›๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ค๐™ข ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ซ๐™š๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Boost pressure was sitting around ๐Ÿญ.๐Ÿฎ ๐™—๐™–๐™ง. While that is above standard, itโ€™s a tad low for this level of tune. There was clearly ๐™ฃ๐™ค ๐™–๐™™๐™Ÿ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™–๐™ž๐™ง-๐™›๐™ช๐™š๐™ก ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค, with lambda sitting at a steady 0.99 all the way to redline. Which would be fine for a stock car, but on a tuned vehicle it can result in ๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™˜๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™–๐™ง๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™๐™ž๐™œ๐™ ๐™š๐™ญ๐™๐™–๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™œ๐™–๐™จ ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š๐™จ ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Here's some data from a BMW 120d we tuned last week. As with all cars we tune, this one was thoroughly data-logged before and after tuning to evaluate its performance ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Data-logging allows us to monitor key performance indicators and safety parameters โ€” and on certain cars, it can also provide a fairly accurate estimation of torque ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

When comparing the data and claimed power figures, we can see this BMW was in great health from the start, logging slightly above the standard torque figure of 380Nm ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ we quoted at 440Nm at stage 1, and the logs show it producing a snip above that once tuned ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿฆ

Justin recently visited us with his stunning A45 AMG ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ our initial checks showed it had already been tuned (unbeknown to him). For a lot of tuners that would be it - thanks for coming, see you later ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

We then took some data logs to see how it was running and things didn't look too bad at all ๐Ÿ“ˆ it was making about the right amount of boost, fuelling looked okay and safety parameters such as exhaust gas temperature and knock control were in check too ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

However, it did have some odd driving characteristics at part throttle ๐Ÿค”

We then took a read from the ECU for closer analysis of the map where it became apparent the throttle request had been mapped in a way that meant the throttle pedal was more like an on/off switch with little in-between ๐Ÿ˜• and there were some other areas for improvement too...

With the customer's consent we set about making some adjustments to smooth out the throttle request, add a bit of ignition timing and fine tune the fuelling too ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Although overall performance was only marginally improved, the difference to how the car drove was night and day. And the customer's feedback speaks for itself ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ
