We hear this all the time — but here’s a real-world example that says otherwise 👇

This M140i owner 𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝟮 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙆𝙚𝙣𝙩 to see a seemingly reputable tuner for a dyno tune. On arrival they took a read from the ECU, told him it was already modified and sent him home...

Not convinced, the customer gave us a call for a second opinion 🦏

We took an ECU read for 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳 map analysis, and sure enough it was modified - but the only modification we could find was a 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲 where an aftermarket exhaust had been fitted...

Nothing else.

We then perform our own 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟭 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗽, fully tested and 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 👌🏼

Fast forward a couple of months the customer visited our friends at Surrey Rolling Road, and the results speak for themselves 😉📈

Proof 𝙊𝙉𝘾𝙀 𝘼𝙂𝘼𝙄𝙉, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨 💪🏼 and just because someone does have a dyno, it doesn't guarantee you'll be getting thorough job...

If you own a BMW, Mini, Mercedes, Toyota Supra or Ford Transit made since 2020 - chences are it's tuning protected and has not been possible to tune - until now!

𝘾𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝟮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝘼𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙚 👌🏼🔥

This wasn’t your average “flash and dash” Stage 2…

This one’s running larger 390cc injectors, so it needed a proper custom calibration to scale them in correctly — no shortcuts here 👌🏼

The car came to us previously tuned, but the owner wasn’t happy with how it drove. So we wiped the slate clean and started fresh.

After loading a base file and taking some data logs, it was obvious this Abarth wasn’t happy…

❌ Misfiring
❌ Boost lag
❌ Fuelling all over the place

Time to dig deeper 🧐

First up — smoke test.
Straight away we found the issue… the fuel pressure regulator had been left disconnected 😮

That’s a big problem❗

The FPR is there to increase fuel pressure in line with boost. Without it? The car runs lean under boost — and that’s how you end up with melted internals 😬

Next, we checked the actuator. We were meant to be fitting an uprated unit (wrong one sent out 👎), but after testing it, we adjusted the preload to sharpen up response and reduce boost lag 💪🏼

With everything sorted, we got back into the mapping.

A few revisions later and…

✅ Boosting exactly as it should
✅ Fuelling dialled in perfectly
✅ Driving properly

Another Abarth saved and set up the right way 😉👌🏼

This is Danny's M135i 👌🏼

Danny won't know this, but 6 years ago he was my first proper customer outside my friends and family. Since then we have tuned multiple vehicles for his friends and family, and recently came out to see him again - this time with his mighty M135i 💪🏼

He bought the car already tuned, but annoyingly BMW wiped the calibration while working on it 🙄 he then installed a generic stage 2 from MHD, but wasn't convinced it was delivering peak performance 📉

We started by logging data to see exactly what was going on. While the map was safe, it was extremely weak for a “Stage 2” setup, producing just over 1 bar of boost. From there, we started developing our own bespoke Stage 2 calibration. After some testing and a couple of revisions, we were safely achieving around 1.2 bar at peak 📈 with significantly improved fueling and ignition too 😉👌🏼

Based on airflow calculations, I estimate the car is making around 430hp. But Danny later messaged to say he lined it up against another M135i that was dyno’d at 438hp — and his was quicker 🚗💨💨💨💥

Here at Rhino Auto, we pride ourselves on being thorough and following the correct processes, and Danny’s M135i is proof once again that you do not need a dyno to tune a car properly — so long as the correct processes are being followed, of course 😉

This customer got in touch after having his SQ5 remapped by a large national tuning company 👑👀 During the process there was 𝙣𝙤 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖-𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡... And then their rep 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙩 😳🚩

After a quick call, we offered to carry out a 𝙢𝙖𝙥 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 to see whether everything was as it should be. On arrival, we took a full ECU read to analyse the calibration and logged live data to assess real-world performance 📈 and it didn’t take long to see there was 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 👍🏼

Boost pressure was sitting around 𝟭.𝟮 𝙗𝙖𝙧. While that is above standard, it’s a tad low for this level of tune. There was clearly 𝙣𝙤 𝙖𝙙𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙞𝙧-𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤, with lambda sitting at a steady 0.99 all the way to redline. Which would be fine for a stock car, but on a tuned vehicle it can result in 𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙝𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙜𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 😬
On top of that, the car was 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬𝙧𝙥𝙢, and took a while to wake up 🥱😴

With our revised calibration, we’re now seeing:

𝗪𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗠𝗪 - 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝙈𝙐𝘾𝙃 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿 😎

Yes it's true, this 2023 Toyota Supra is based on a BMW Z4. That not only means it comes equipped with the legendary and highly tunable B58 engine 😉👌🏼 but also means that any manufactured after June 2020 will likely have the ECU locked for tuning 😥

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙧! We now offer ECU unlocking services for such vehicles 😁👍🏼 today we will be performing some preliminary data-logs to get a baseline reading, before sending the ECU away for unlocking 💪🏼

Once the ECU is returned we can then start tuning 🤩📈 keep your eyes peeled for more updates 👍🏼

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁? 𝙌𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙮! 🦂

While we love working on a bit of everything, if you asked me outright, I’d usually say we’re VW/Audi specialists — it’s what I’ve spent the last 20 years tinkering with, and I personally own several tuned VAG's.

But over the years, there’s another brand that’s stolen a surprising amount of our attention: 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 🦂

I’ve honestly lost count of how many we’ve tuned… But it’s a lot, and they never fail to deliver fantastic results 👌🏼 with most models seeing a 30% increase in torque with just a remap 📈

And let’s clear up a common misconception while we’re here: the whole “Fiat reliability” myth? From a tuning perspective, these cars have proven to been incredibly robust. They rarely give me any grief, take power well, and they’re genuinely enjoyable to work on 💪🏼🙂👍🏼

𝑷𝑹𝑶𝑽𝑬𝑵 𝑮𝑨𝑰𝑵𝑺 💪🏼

Here's some data from a BMW 120d we tuned last week. As with all cars we tune, this one was thoroughly data-logged before and after tuning to evaluate its performance 📈

Data-logging allows us to monitor key performance indicators and safety parameters — and on certain cars, it can also provide a fairly accurate estimation of torque 👍🏼

When comparing the data and claimed power figures, we can see this BMW was in great health from the start, logging slightly above the standard torque figure of 380Nm 👌🏼 we quoted at 440Nm at stage 1, and the logs show it producing a snip above that once tuned 😉🦏

We came out to see Jack, the owner of this mint mk7 Golf GTD 👌🏼 With a little advice from us Jack had fitted some choice modifications in preparation for a stage 2 remap 😈

I'll say it again: 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙍𝙀𝙈𝘼𝙋𝙎 𝘼𝙍𝙀 𝙀𝙌𝙐𝘼𝙇!

Justin recently visited us with his stunning A45 AMG 👌🏼 our initial checks showed it had already been tuned (unbeknown to him). For a lot of tuners that would be it - thanks for coming, see you later 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼

We then took some data logs to see how it was running and things didn't look too bad at all 📈 it was making about the right amount of boost, fuelling looked okay and safety parameters such as exhaust gas temperature and knock control were in check too 👍🏼

However, it did have some odd driving characteristics at part throttle 🤔

We then took a read from the ECU for closer analysis of the map where it became apparent the throttle request had been mapped in a way that meant the throttle pedal was more like an on/off switch with little in-between 😕 and there were some other areas for improvement too...

With the customer's consent we set about making some adjustments to smooth out the throttle request, add a bit of ignition timing and fine tune the fuelling too 👍🏼

Although overall performance was only marginally improved, the difference to how the car drove was night and day. And the customer's feedback speaks for itself 😉👌🏼
