Callum passed his driving test today at York test centre with an awesome ZERO driver faults. I will miss our lessons feeding horses, taking the mick out of custard cars and certain people’s taste in music 😆 but seriously what a great driver you are - I’m super pleased for you 😊🙌

I must say this to learners most lessons. It’s kinder to carry on and let us go when we are ready.

A flash in the Highway Code has only one meaning:
A warning of your presence.
Not “go.”
Not “pull out.”
Not “I’m letting you out.”

When someone flashes at a learner, the learner feels obliged to move.
They often think, “They’ve flashed, I must go now.”
And in that moment of pressure, some stop checking properly.
Some misjudge a gap.
Some move because they feel hurried not because it is genuinely safe.

Quite often they stall rushing to move if under pressure .

This is how accidents happen.
Not out of bad intentions, but out of confusion.

Learners are already managing mirrors, signals, clutch control, traffic, nerves, and the entire environment around them.
Adding a flashing headlight into the mix only increases pressure, breaks their concentration, and replaces a safe decision with a rushed one.

The kindest thing you can do for a learner is to be predictable.

☑️ Keep driving normally
☑️Hold your speed steadily
☑️ Let them decide when it is safe
☑️ Give them time and space
☑️ Allow them to follow what they’re being taught not someone else’s gesture

Learners grow confident by making safe decisions themselves.
Not by being pushed.
Not by being beckoned.
Not by feeling they owe someone a quick pull-out because of a flash.

Patience is far kinder than signals that send mixed messages.

Let’s support learners properly not by trying to “help,” but by giving them the calm, consistent environment they need to learn safely.

Stepping into driving lessons without checking your instructor’s credentials can steer you straight into danger, which is why knowing exactly who’s teaching you matters more than most learners realise.

Having a genuine, fully qualified ADI behind the wheel means you’ll see a green hexagonal badge clearly displayed in their vehicle’s window.

Any PDI, a licensed trainee instructor who is still working toward full qualification, must legally display a pink triangular badge, so you always know who is guiding your learning.

Under no circumstances should you rely on someone who displays no badge at all, because that’s a strong sign they may be an unlicensed and unsafe instructor.

Not only do unlicensed instructors lack training, but they also operate without DBS checks, background vetting, or the authority to log and report issues that protect learner drivers.

Nothing puts you at greater risk than someone teaching illegally, because they’re not accountable to DVSA standards and have no regulatory oversight.

Every legitimate instructor is insured, rigorously trained, and uses dual-controlled vehicles to keep you and everyone around you as safe as possible.

When an instructor insists you take lessons in your own car, it’s almost always a red flag that they aren’t qualified—and it’s something you should treat with extreme caution.

Learners deserve the reassurance that their instructor meets professional standards, carries the correct insurance, and is operating legally.

Operating without a licence isn’t just dishonest; it puts you, your passengers, pedestrians, and all other road users at serious risk.

Vigilance is key, and if you suspect someone is teaching unlawfully, it’s vital to report them to keep others safe.

Every road user benefits when learners are taught by trained, trusted, and properly authorised instructors—don’t settle for anything less.

A gridlocked York presented lots of crazy driving antics for Maisy to negotiate on test this afternoon. The examiner commented on her lovely drive and calm composure throughout despite the change of routes and u-turns! Well done Maisy you deserve the brilliant 4 df pass. Enjoy your freedom 😊

Nic Ramskill passed his driving test today at York test centre. To say Nic was shocked would be an understatement but with a mere 2 driver faults I’m not sure why. Nic is another learner who came to me part way through his learning journey. My job was to help Nic nail that test on the day. Some “polishing” on skills but more to help with confidence and assurance to trust his decision making. Well done Nic, I’m sure mum is happier than you though 😉 drive safe 🚘

A big congratulations to Abi who passed her driving test whilst I was enjoying some winter sun last week. Abi contacted me part way through learning to drive and was already very capable although she didn’t know it! My job was to help Abi grow in confidence, trust in her ability and most importantly start to enjoy her lessons and driving. I’m super proud of Abi, first time pass and only 2 driver faults - well done! You can’t hide in the little blue car Abi so don’t forget to wave 👋😊
