🔧 Audi TT P3044 non start 🔧

Vehicle come to us from another garage, work previously carried out was a replacement ecu and new fuel pump but vehicle would still not start…

As always we carried out a full vehicle scan, we found multiple fault codes: P025A P3045 P3044
P3073 relating to the in tank fuel pump and fuel pump control module…

Next step we found a wiring diagram for the fuel pump control module as this was a good point to start carrying out some testing, we load tested all powers and grounds at the control unit and they tested good, next step we had to get the oscilloscope to test fuel pump control as this was a 3 phase fuel pump system…

We hooked up 3 channels to the fuel pump control module for U-V-W and a additional amp clamp to see current draw, we then used the scan tool to bidirectionally control the fuel pump control module…

Straight away from the scope signals we could see that the fuel pump control module was causing the issue, after a full rotation of the fuel pump the module would stop supplying voltage to the fuel pump for a split of a second and start again…

We ordered a new genuine fuel pump control module and fitted to the vehicle, the vehicle now started with no faults, we then took another look with the oscilloscope for a known good wave form for future reference 🔧

🔧 2008 Mini One K-Bus communication fault 🔧

Customer complaint: multiple warning lights on instrument cluster and multiple interior buttons not working…

We confirmed the customers complaint and carried out a full vehicle scan, straight away we could see we had no communication with multiple modules on the network and a fault code 000040 - KOMBI k bus communication fault…

Next step we pulled up a k bus communication wiring diagram and confirmed the KOMBI is the gateway to all the modules on the network we could not communicate with, we removed the KOMBI to check the communication lines with a oscilloscope and confirmed we had no communication on the k bus…

Next step we disconnected the KOMBI to rule out the gateway pulling down the communication line, the communication line stayed the same, we then moved onto the next module in line the BCM, and by chance when we disconnected the BCM we gained communication again…

To keep costs down we supplied a used BCM and cloned the original eeprom chip to the used allowing a plug and play fit, the BCM was the cause of taking down the the whole communication network, the car now communicates with all modules on the network and warning light free 🔧

Customer complaint: multiple lights on instrument cluster, vehicle in limp mode…

As always a full vehicle test, fault codes P0641 - sensor supply n1 voltage 1:DEF and P2452 - DPF pressure sensor 1:DEF…

Before diving in we check dealer information for more information on these fault codes, they related to a 5v supply issue, we first pulled up a wiring diagram to confirm the 5v was shared with multiple sensors and now had a sense of direction…

We first started with the dpf pressure sensor, confirmed we had no 5v at the sensor, so now we know we either had a shorted sensor to ground or wiring shorted to ground pulling down the 5v circuit…

Next step was to start disconnecting sensors on this 5v circuit with the dpf sensor back pinned with a multimeter to see when the 5v supply comes back to life, we started with the dpf sensor then the boost pressure sensor then the mass air flow sensor, still no 5v supply…

The last thing to unplug was the upstream boost pressure sensor which was quite hard to access, after a little looking on how to disconnecting this sensor following the wiring we spotted a suspicious area where the wiring was against the chassis…

We finally unplugged this sensor and pulled up the harness to access the protective tape, on the multimeter we now had our 5v supply back, after taking the tape off the harness we could see the smallest rub mark through the 5v supply to the upstream boost pressure sensor, we had found it 💪🏼 we repaired the wiring and also added some protective rubber to the chassis to prevent the fault happening in the future 🔧

🔧 Ford Focus A/C not working 🔧

Customer explained this has been a on going fault, the a/c compressor was changes and system regassed, worked for a little bit then the relay changed and worked again but now it doesn’t work…

First we carried out a full vehicle scan, no codes relating to a a/c fault so we check active tests to see if we could see/hear the a/c compressor working unfortunately there wasn’t a option to activate the a/c relay…

Before pulling up a wiring diagram we decided to remove the a/c relay to put power down to the a/c compressor, there wasn’t any audible noise from the compressor… while at the relay we confirmed power to the relay to rule out the fuse was also good…

Next step we raised the vehicle on the ramp to check we had power going down to the compressor and we did, we was missing the ground at the a/c compressor, next we decided to pull up a wiring diagram and find out where the compressor gets its ground from, on the diagram showing the drivers side chassis ground point…

After thinking of a plan we decided to use a bulb at pin 2 of the a/c compressor (ground) and the other wire from the bulb to battery positive, so when wiggling the harness to the a/c compressor if the bulb lights we can confirm a wiring issue… surly a little wiggle and the bulb lit up confirming our suspicions on a wiring fault in the loom…

After pulling the loom into the engine bay and removing the protective tape, we was confused as there didn’t seem to have a wiring issue, after further inspection we found at the plug some melted plastic, we actually had a pin grab issue, we removed the pin and replaced and tested, now the customer has a full working a/c system 🔧

Customer complaint : virtical headlight adjustment fault on instrument cluster…

First things first we carried out a full vehicle test and found fault codes 8041B6 - headlight beam throw adjustment : system failed and fault code 8041B7 - headlight beam throw adjustment : open winding in one or both motors …

Due to limited information we carried out a functional test to find out if the fault was for one or both headlights, after a function test we found the drivers side head light didn’t move on start up so now we had a sense of direction we pulled up a diagram to start testing at the drivers headlight…

With a advantage of the passanger headlight working we decided to test what we had on the passanger side headlight wiring harness and what we didn’t have on the drivers headlight harness, we found on pin 9 of the drivers harness we didn’t have a ground, so the next step we checked at the body control module to see if we had a ground there…

On pin 48 at the body control module we confirmed there was a ground coming out of the module, now we suspected a possible wiring issue, just to double check we load tested this wire from pin 9 of headlight harness to pin 48 at the body control module and confirmed we had a break in the wire …

After some time of searching areas the headlight harness would chafe we finally found the green suspect, the wiring harness was repaired and fault codes clear and headlight now adjusting on start up 👍🏼

Customer complaint: vehicle would crank but not start, after being looked at by a few people and a new ecu cloned too the vehicle it now doesn’t crank…

Straight away when turning on the ignition we couldn’t see the eml shown in the instrument cluster this is usually a give away that there is no communication with the engine ecu, but after a quick scan we was wrong, we found communication with the engine ecu and fault code P0513 - Immobiliser key incorrect …

After a little think we decided to ignore this fault code and start some basic tests at the fuses and engine ecu… we pulled up a wiring diagram for powers and grounds at the engine ecu and started looking at some fuses…

We found there was only power at fuse F33, there was no power at F18 and F29, both F18 and F29 are on separate circuits, the circuit we decided to diagnose first was F18 as this comes from the ignition relay and if the ecu is not powered up correctly it wouldn’t send a ground to main ecu relay to power F29 and other fuses…

When testing at the ignition relay we found no ground to terminal 85, on the wiring diagram this was a chassis ground so we first checked the chassis ground this checked out okay, next step was to remove the fuse box to confirm we have a ground going into the fuse box, using a test light to load test the ground we confirmed the issue was inside the fuse box…

Next step we decided to strip down the fuse box for further investigation, low and behold we found the ground track to pin 85 of the relay burnt, we had found the issue, but this wasn’t the only issue… we then decided to repair the track on the fuse box and refit, we now had a engine management light on the instrument cluster but still a non start condition…

Back to the drawing board we re-checked all fuses and found we still had no power at F29 🤯 so the next point of testing was at the main ecu relay, we found at pin 85 there was no ground, like at the ignition relay but this ground come from pin 16 at the engine ecu… the next step we checked we had a ground coming from the engine ecu at pin 16 and we did so back too the fuse box…

We removed the fuse box once again to find we didn’t have a ground at plug X50A, now we confirmed there was a wiring issue between the engine ecu and fuse box which I think was the original fault the customer had with a crank non start situation… we removed the factory tape from the short harness leading to the fuse box and found a previous repair for this issue had broken again, we repaired the wiring and the car fired back into life 👍🏼

Customer complaint: engine management and eps light on instrument cluster …

We confirmed customer complaint when pulling vehicle into the workshop, after carrying out a full vehicle scan we found fault code P2123 - throttle pedal position switch ‘D’ circuit high …

First things first we pulled up some live data and confirmed there was no response from accelerator pedal voltage 1, next we got a diagram for the throttle pedal position sensor to identify the wiring for voltage 1 at the throttle pedal :
pin 2 - 5v
pin 3 - ground
pin 4 - signal

When testing at the throttle pedal multi-plug we found on pin 3 there wasn’t a good ground, next step we moved to the engine ecu to rule out any wiring issues, at the ecu multi-plug we had a good ground indicating a wiring issue between the throttle pedal position sensor and ecu so we thought …

Luckily we double and triple check our work, we tested the ground back at the throttle pedal and we now had a good ground, the only thing we had done was remove the engine ecu from its holder 🤔 now we decided to put the test light from battery positive to the ground at the throttle position sensor and carry out a wiggle test near the ecu harness and good job we did as we found the ground wire at the ecu terminal to be loose 👀 we removed and pinch up all 6 wires from the engine ecu too the throttle pedal, cleared codes and retested all good 🔧

Customer complaint: coil light flashing on instrument cluster and extended crank…

First things first as always confirm customer complaint and carry out a full vehicle scan, fault code p0341 - camshaft position sensor circuit range/performance…

The mechanical timing had already been checked by a reputable garage so the next step we got a wiring diagram for the camshaft position sensor and check the 5v feed at pin 3 and ground at pin 1 which was all good, to rule out any wiring issues from the signal wire pin 2 we decided to get a cam/crank wave form at the ecu plug…

The camshaft and crankshaft signal looked good to the ecu so the next step was to find a know good waveform for this engine code BMS, when we found a known good waveform we noticed straight away the camshaft signal was totally different to the known good so we contacted the customer to ask if any additional work had been done previous to this fault, the customer reported the engine was changed and after that this code was present…

Next step we contacted our parts supplier to get the OEM part number for the camshaft pick up - 045 109 239 C, then we checked the part number of the camshaft pick up fitted to the vehicle - 045 109 239 B, the incorrect camshaft pick up was fitted to the engine giving the wrong camshaft signal setting the code p0341 🔧
