🚐🔧 Sometimes a simple fault isn't quite as simple as it first appears...
A few weeks ago, we were called out to a caravan in St Austell with what seemed like a straightforward issue – an Alde heating system that wasn't working.
Our initial inspection quickly revealed that the heating fluid had never been changed. Over time it had become corrosive, causing internal leaks within the system, meaning the Alde unit would need replacing.
When we returned to fit the new unit, we discovered a second problem. The leisure battery was completely dead. After replacing the battery and carrying out further testing, we found there was still no 12V power throughout the caravan. The culprit this time was a failed PSU, which had to be removed and sent away for repair.
A couple of weeks later, the repaired PSU was refitted and finally showed signs of life... but the caravan still wasn't happy. We were greeted with a communication error on the PSU. As we removed the control panel to investigate, mouse droppings literally rained down from behind it.
What followed was a much larger investigation.
Furniture panels and the fridge had to be removed so we could trace the wiring.
The mice had been using the wiring loom behind the fridge as a climbing frame and had travelled throughout the caravan, causing damage wherever access became restricted.
In total, we found five separate locations where wiring had been completely chewed through, including the main wiring loom, Alde control panel cable and data cables. Some furniture boards had also suffered damage.
After breaking the news to the customer, we sourced the correct cables and put together a repair plan.
Today, we returned to complete the job.
✅ Rebuilt damaged wiring looms and data cables
✅ Repaired and rebuilt the fridge compartment seal
✅ Refitted the fridge
✅ Tested the gas system for tightness
✅ Reinstalled furniture boards and trims
✅ Filled and commissioned the Alde system with fresh 5-year pink fluid
✅ Fitted a new solar regulator at the customer's request
The result?
A fully functioning heating system, working electrics, a safe gas installation and one very happy customer.
It certainly wasn't the most pleasant job we've ever undertaken, but seeing the customer's face go from despair to a huge smile when they stepped into a warm, bright caravan made all the hard work worthwhile.
