This 2012 BMW 320d F31 Touring was in with us recently for our popular N47 timing chain service. The owner hadn’t had the car long and did have a written receipt for a timing chain change, however when they contacted the garage to question this the garage couldn’t confirm if it had been done or not. So with this in mind they wanted to ensure it had definitely been done, and done properly.

We got the car up on the ramp and could see that there was evidence that someone else had been in there before due to the amount of sealant around the timing chain cover area. Being completely transparent with our customer we let them know and gave them the option of if they wanted us to continue or not. We did also find a dubious repair to the sump which worried us a little as to how the rest of the previous work had been performed. Our customer was happy for us to continue the work regardless.

The timing chain components had indeed been changed previously however a low quality BGA timing chain kit had been used. In addition to this as previously mentioned before, the sump had been repaired poorly with chemical metal and the amount of sealant used on the work was excessive to say the least, so much so that bits of it had found its way into the oil pump pickup pipe which could have led to oil starvation. All this being said, the engine internally was very clean for its 140k mileage so had clearly been looked after and regularly serviced throughout its life.

Whilst we were carrying out the work we also noticed that the oil filter housing gaskets were leaking, another common issue on the N47/N57 engines. Customer asked us to replace these together with sourcing a replacement sump.

As always, we used the tried and tested reliable OE IWIS timing chain kit together with a genuine rocker cover & oil filter gaskets to complete the work. Once the mechanical work was finished we cleaned the engine bay and gave the whole vehicle a complimentary valet.

Our customer was regularly kept updated through pictorial evidence of our work and our findings. All components were meticulously cleaned before being refitted.

Please get in contact if you'd like us to work on your pride and joy.

This 2019 BMW 420d Gran Coupe was recently in with us with a leaking rear differential input seal. Quite a common problem on alot of BMWs.

Seal was replaced using genuine BMW parts together with differential fluid being drained and refilled too.

Whilst the car was with us for the day, the rear brake pads were changed as was the battery as it was found to be low in capacity.

As always, if you appreciate the quality and effort we put into all our work and would like us to work on your pride and joy please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

This 2012 Mini Cooper D was in with us last week for our popular N47 timing chain replacement service.

With a shade under 146,000 miles it had done well to get to this stage without being changed, however the all too familiar rattle proved it was well overdue.

Customer also opted to have their inlet ports walnut blasted and intake manifold cleaned whilst everything was apart.

Other common issues were also addressed whilst we were in there such as the crank dampener, aux belt, coolant fl**ge and breather pipe. We also found damage to the crank trigger wheel and sensor so these were replaced too.

As always time was taken to ensure everything was meticulously cleaned before being reassembled.

Car was handed back to the customer after having a complimentary valet inside and out.

If you appreciate the quality and effort we put into all our work and would like us to work on your pride and joy please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

This 2013 Mazda CX-5 was in with us recently with reported low oil pressure issues.

The owner had previously taken the car into their usual garage twice to resolve but unfortunately the problem hadn't been fixed despite them spending over £700.

This is a well documented problem with the SkyActiv 2.2 diesel engines. The injector seals fail allowing carbon to enter the internals of the engine and over time this blocks the oil pickup causing oil pressure issues and if not caught early will eventually lead to engine failure. Fortunately we caught this one in time before serious damage was caused.

The following work was carried out...

Sump removal and clean ✅
Replacement oil pickup tube ✅
Replacement injector seals ✅
Replacement rocker cover & associated gaskets ✅
Cleanup of carbon buildup in cylinder head ✅
Oil & oil filter ✅
Complimentary interior and exterior valet ✅

As always, the customer was kept updated regularly and supplied with pictures throughout the job as evidence of the work being completed.

If you appreciate the quality and effort we put into all our jobs and would like us to work on your pride and joy please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

Returning customer Matt, brought us his stunning 2018 Mercedes C63 AMG 4.0 Bi-Turbo earlier this month for its yearly service.

At a shade under 40,000 miles it was due a B6 service, so we replaced the following using all genuine Mercedes parts :

Oil and Oil Filter ✅
Air Filter ✅
Cabin Filter ✅
Pollen Filter ✅
Spark Plugs ✅
Brake Fluid ✅

As usual the service was recorded on the official Mercedes' service history database to keep the cars records up to date.

If you appreciate what we do and would like us to work on your pride and joy please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

This 2015 Mini Countryman 2.0SD with the infamous N47 engine was brought to us with a suspected blown turbo. Unfortunately as we dug deeper there was more, much more at fault with it.

We heard the all too familiar sound of a stretched timing chain on first startup, which was verified via an official test and when we checked the oil level it wasn’t even registering on the dipstick.

Customer instructed us to replace what was needed, however as we started to strip down the engine more issues came to light.

It was clear the car hadn’t been serviced for years, service counter on the car showed it had only been serviced 4 times in it’s 10 year, 75,000 mile life.

There was considerable sludge and carbon build up within the engine internally which had caused the turbo to fail and timing chain to stretch due to lack of lubrication.

Whilst the engine was apart we opted to check the conrod and main bearings and thankfully this was the right decision since wear was also found on these.

The following work was carried out on this car whilst it was in with us…

Full engine decoke & clean ✅
Timing chain replacement using genuine IWIS parts ✅
Rod & main bearing replacement including crankshaft polish ✅
Dual mass flywheel & clutch replacement ✅
Turbo replacement ✅
Crankshaft dampener & aux belt replacement ✅
Oil & filter service ✅
Complimentary valet ✅

This Mini should now be good for at least another 75,000 miles now.

As always, if you like what you see and would like us to work on your pride and joy please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

This 2018 JCW Mini was recovered in recently due to our customer reporting top end engine noises. We immediately suspected VANOS and/or potential timing chain issues. After running various tests using the official BMW diagnostics system we found that both VANOS solenoids had failed. After replacing these with genuine solenoids the noises disappeared. We then ran a further test to check the timing chain stretch which came back within manufacturers tolerances.

Throughout the previous tests we noticed that the engine didn't seem as smooth as it could have been and so did various running tests to confirm the condition of the ignition and fuelling systems. This highlighted a further issue with the injector in cylinder 1, a common issue in these BMW B48 engines. The customer opted to follow our recommendation of replacing all 4 injectors at this time which we duly did.

Once all the above work was carried out we then took the car out for a road test which highlighted an extremely noisy wheel bearing which after consulting the customer they asked us to replace whilst the car was in with us.

Work was finished off with a complimentary valet inside and out.

As always the customer was kept updated with pictures and videos throughout the process and questions responded to in a timely fashion.

Like what you've seen and value our attention to detail and would like us to work on your vehicle then please don't hesitate to get in touch.

This immaculate and clearly very well looked after 2012 Volkswagen Golf GTI MK6 was in with us recently with the customer reporting a running/hesitation issue.

Diagnostics showed a misfire on cylinder 4 together with codes for the intake manifold flaps, common fault on these engines.

Various tests were carried out and the main culprit narrowed down to being cylinder 4 injector. All 4 injectors were removed and sent away for testing and all 4 were out of tolerance, cylinder 4 injector being the worst. We also noted severe carbon build up on the inlet ports, again very common on direct injection engines such as this one.

Customer opted to have all 4 injectors, inlet manifold and water pump replaced together with having the intake ports walnut blasted. We made sure that all the parts that were removed and were to be reused were thoroughly cleaned before going back onto the car.

All running issues were resolved following our work and the car was returned to the customer after having a complimentary valet inside and out.

As always the customer was kept up to date with pictures and videos along the way.

Customer was also good enough to leave us a fantastic review too. ☺️

Impressed with the work we carry out and attention to detail? Please don't hesitate to get in contact.

This 2016 Porsche Macan was in with us recently for running issues.

We diagnosed it as a misfire on cylinder 4 and after running various tests narrowed it down to a faulty injector.

These run a similar engine variant as the popular Volkswagen Golf GTI from the same period. As such, parts are readily available and reasonably priced. Since the car had covered over 100,000 miles, the customer opted to have all 4 injectors removed whilst we were in there for preventative maintenance We also replaced a coolant line that had gone brittle with age and heat cycles.

Everything replaced and reassembled and the engine was running back to full health and returned back to the customer at a fraction of what it would have cost from a main dealers.

As always the customer was constantly updated with progress via messages and sent photos of all work and parts fitted.

So our first post of 2025 and it's probably going to be a bit of a running theme this year if this month's bookings are anything to go by. The infamous Ingenium 2.0L diesel engine, that can be found in many Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles such as the Evoque, Discovery, E-Pace, F-Pace and many more models, unfortunately has many inherent issues, it's timing chain being one of these.

This customer who owns this 2016 Range Rover Evoque with only a shade under 68,000 miles on the clock was recommended to us by another local garage, after they heard the tell tale rattling noise on cold start during a routine service which indicated a stretched timing chain. Luckily it was caught in time before it had chance to snap and cause engine damage. We replaced all the timing components with genuine Land Rover parts together with the piston cooling solenoid valve and a weeping thermostat housing gasket, both also common faults.

We are one of very few automotive workshops in the area that are prepared to take on these kind of jobs so if you've got a Land Rover or Jaguar vehicle and are interested in having timing chain work or indeed any kind of work carried out please don't hesitate to get in touch. We already have a few of these booked in for work in the coming weeks.

Don't think anything could have prepared us for 2024.....it's been an absolute rollercoaster of a year for us here at TLG. Admittedly it's not been easy at times but it's definitely been worth it.

In March we made a huge leap of faith and signed up for our new 5500sqft unit in the middle of Burscough Industrial Estate, a slight upgrade from our old 2000sqft unit in Lathom.

6 weeks later after alot of investment, hard work and some very long days we had transformed the new premises into a fantastic new workspace and had moved everything over to enable us to start operating from there.

Month in month out we have constantly made improvements to the working environment and we are always adding new equipment, tools and improved working facilities to ensure we can operate as efficiently as possible and service as many vehicles as possible especially now have 5 ramps at our disposal. We take pride in being one of the cleanest, organised and most professional workshops in the area, this is backed up by the compliments we receive on a daily basis regarding our facilities by customers and visitors alike.

In August we welcomed our new apprentice Ethan to the team, who has now fully settled in and become a highly valued employee who has hit the ground running and been able to get his hands dirty and gained a wide range of experience with the many and varied jobs we get involved with here at TLG.

However, we do have to hold our hands up and apologise for our severe lack of social media presence over the past few months, this is merely due to our workload. We've literally been flat out and not really had chance to keep things updated. This however will change in 2025.

We just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the support from customers old and new and all the people we have worked with and on behalf of, other local garages, traders and suppliers alike. Thank you trusting us to work on your vehicles and for all the recommendations it really goes a long way and is very much appreciated.

All the best for 2025 and thanks again, here's a small collection of the many vehicles we've had the pleasure of working on recently.

John recently purchased this immaculate 2017 BMW F31 320d. Since the car had covered over 120k miles he wasted no time in getting it into us to have the timing chain replaced.

When John dropped the car off, he mentioned he was looking at getting his wheels refurbished by a local firm, so since the car was going to be in with us for a few days, and on one of our ramps we offered to remove the wheels and drop off them off to get refurbished for him to save his car being off the road again. Following this he also asked us to source new genuine M badges and black wheel bolts to replace his old rusty ones.

Whilst the car was in with us John also asked us to remove the common issue that are the swirl flaps and clean the inlet manifold and intake ports which we did.

To compliment the work we'd carried out John decided to have us install a stage 1 remap bumping the power up to around 220bhp/440nm which knocked off over 0.5 seconds off the 0-60mph time and over 1 seconds from the 30-70mph time. All proven and verified by logging on the road using official Dragy performance software.

John was kept updated throughout the course of all the work carried out via regular text messages and supplied with pictures/videos of the parts that were installed giving him complete peace of mind that work had been carried out to our usual high standards.

Finally the work completed was logged to BMWs service history database and the in-car iDrive service history was also updated.

As always, if you like the level of care and attention to detail you've seen demonstrated here and you're interested in having us carry out work on your vehicle please don't hesitate to drop us a  message
