Good news if you've ever needed to swap your driving test with another learner. 🚗

From 1 October 2026, DVSA has changed how test swaps work. Previously, both learners had to be available on the phone at the same time, with DVSA calling the second learner while the first waited.

Now the process is simpler: the first learner calls DVSA to request the swap, then the second learner calls separately, on the same working day, to confirm they agree. DVSA can only process the swap once both calls have been made that day.

You can contact DVSA on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Learners still need to arrange their own swaps; instructors cannot do it on their behalf.

If you had one calm practice session for a longer journey, which part would you choose first? 🚗

A) Joining a dual carriageway
B) Following signs through an unfamiliar town
C) Managing a rural road with bends
D) Taking a planned break and resetting your concentration

There is no wrong answer. Different routes help build different skills, and confidence often grows when you choose one manageable challenge instead of trying to practise everything at once. A longer drive can be broken into sections: plan the route before setting off, leave enough time, take sensible breaks and keep your attention on the road rather than chasing the clock.

Single-track roads can feel completely manageable when you give yourself time to plan. A little reminder from the Highway Code: if you see a vehicle coming towards you, use a passing place on your left—or wait opposite a passing place on your right. 🚗

Look well ahead, ease off early and avoid squeezing into a gap at the last moment. If the passing place is on the other side, stop before it so the approaching driver can use it. Never park in a passing place, even for a quick photo or a phone check; it needs to stay available for traffic meeting safely.

On rural roads, expect hidden bends, cyclists, walkers, livestock and changing weather. Keep your speed low enough to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

Practising? Talk through your plan with your instructor or supervising driver before the next narrow-road drive. Calm forward planning goes a long way.

🚗 DRIVING TEST RELEASE DATES – IMPORTANT UPDATE! 🚗

If you’re looking to book your practical driving test, make a note of these dates! 📅

The DVSA now releases new driving test appointments at 6am every Monday – including Bank Holidays.

⏰ TOP TIP: Be logged into the official GOV.UK booking system and ready for 6am on Monday morning. With the current demand for tests, appointments can go quickly.

Remember, learners now need to book and manage their own driving test, so please don’t wait for your instructor to book it for you.

When the light fades earlier or the weather turns, which driving skill do you most want to practise?

There is no wrong answer. Different roads bring different challenges, whether you are practising in a town, on a rural route or around a busy test-centre area. The best preparation is gradual, supervised practice that helps you understand what you can see and how much time you need.

Choose a letter, or tell us the one thing that makes autumn and winter driving feel easier for you. Small conversations can give another learner a really useful idea—and confidence grows when we share practical support.
