Peter Swete has been an enthusiastic racing driver of pre-war and fifties racing cars and is involved with helping Mission Motorsports, the Forces Motorsports charity, make a success of their donated day at Goodwood on September 6th (see below). This is the last day the track is being used before it closes for the Revival. He has signed up twenty 50’s and 60’s era sports racing cars to come to the event and has been asked to add 10 pre-war sports racing cars. Please have a look at the information below and get in touch with Peter if you are interested in this event.

The Mission Motorsport objective is “to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations by providing opportunities through Motorsport”.

YOUR MISSION - YOUR CHANCE TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK

The Mission Motorsport objective is “to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations by providing opportunities through Motorsport”

To Pre-war Racing Drivers/Owners.

Dear Historic Racing Driver,

Major James Cameron, Director of Mission Motorsports and I discussed an idea of joining forces at one of their events using our historic sports racing cars and their more modern machinery to give a racing experience to injured soldiers. James was enthusiastic and after receiving the very generous donation of a full day's use of Goodwood circuit on 6th September he asked me whether I could organise 10 fifties and 10 sixties sports racing cars and more recently 10 pre-war sports racing cars to join in a full day's event which they will organise.

I'm aware that pre-war cars rarely have seat belts or roll over protection so you will be more tightly controlled than the post war sports cars. Bear in mind your car needs to be suitable to carry a disabled person, i.e. a passenger door or easy access and ideally a separate passenger seat. But it is proposed that you will get a warm up period and up to 3 sessions with passengers on the circuit.

There will be no entry fee but if you are able to give advice on possible work opportunties to those veterans who are interested it would be much appreciated as of course would any donation to MM.

I will be sending out a programme of the day's events nearer the time. It should be a great day and if you would like to participate please call or email me.

Owner-Driver-Mechanic 2012 Standings Announced. VSCC Press Release.

As the 2012 VSCC racing season culminated at Snetterton on 30 September at the Seaman Memorial Trophies Race Meeting, with final positions for the Owner-Driver-Mechanic Awards accrued and winners announced at the end of the meeting.

Despite winning a short Scratch race at the meeting, Andrew Mitchell’s 1937 HRG retired from the Owner-Driver-Mechanic race with a broken distributor lead diminishing his chances to net the extra points he needed to improve on his 3rd place overall, with 50 points. Andrew has had a consistent season supporting all five of the ‘Owner-Driver-Mechanic’ races this season (Silverstone-Cadwell Park-Mallory Park-Pembrey-Snetterton) with a highest place finish of an overall win at Silverstone in April.

Three drivers each accrued 57 points and shared 2nd overall these being MG J2 racer, Fred Boothby, Alfa Romeo 8C peddler, Neil Twyman and HRG man Will Mahany. Boothby and Twyman had both participated in all five races, across the country. Twyman won at Mallory Park where Boothby’s top score was 5th place in the same race. Mahany’s points tally was particularly impressive given that he had only raced at Cadwell and Snetterton, flying over from his Caribbean base, to compete. Snetterton was a successful meeting overall for Mahany who also won the Spero and Voiturette race for cars up to 1100cc.

A jubilant Ian Standing won the 2012 Trophy, following four successful performances in his 1929 Riley Brooklands, the highest place being 8th place in the Pembrey Race back in July.

Riley racer Ian Standing accepts the 2012 Owner-Driver-Mechanic Award from John Guyatt.

The ‘Owner-Driver-Mechanic Award’ is an integral part of VSCC competition now, and is often the hub of the paddock thanks to the efforts of John Guyatt, Lesley Macalpine, and John and Maxine F**k of Instant Marquees. The award acknowledges performance and aims to revive the spirit of the "good ol' days" when members took their original specification sports-car to VSCC meetings, having prepared it themselves, and raced it around the circuit in the hope of a win.

2012 Class awards for the capacity classes are as follows:

· Awards to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places (subject to at least 8, 10 and 12 starters).

· An award to the first un-supercharged cars up to 1100cc, between

· 1101cc – 1500cc, 1501cc – 2000cc, 2001cc - 3000 and over 3-litres.

· An award to the first Vintage car (subject to 4 starters).

· Awards to the first VSCC ‘Standard’ car.

The ‘Owner-Driver-Mechanic’ racers, enjoyed one final outing at Castle Combe’s inaugural Autumn Classic Meeting on 6 October. 28 cars took to the circuit for a 20 minute race which was won by Tom McWhirter’s invited Jaguar SS100. With the battle for points put to bed the weekend prior, the atmosphere at the ‘Owner-Driver-Mechanic’ marquee was a relaxed affair with competitors enjoying the excellent hospitality while swapping stories of the season’s racing.

The 2013 VSCC Racing season gets underway with the traditional ‘Spring Start’ race meeting at Silverstone which, for the first time, will be a two-day meeting on 20-21 April.

‘Set 3’ Standard and Modified Pre-war Sports-cars are described as open cars with road equipment to UK legal requirements; this to include wings, windscreen, full size battery, efficient silencer and working lights; these must include two working headlamps of appropriate minimum dimensions (a single lamp may be accepted if originally fitted). If originally fitted they must have starter and dynamo. They must have at least two seats and a working reverse gear. All Vintage and PVT VSCC eligible sports-cars that are classified as VSCC Standard and Modified can race but ultra-quick cars will be discouraged. This grid is one of the Club’s best supported and reliably brings a full grid of quality cars to every race meeting and represents many delightful marques such as Alfa Romeo, Talbot, Frazer Nash, Alvis, Delage, Delahaye, Fiat, Riley, Austin, Bentley, Aston Martin, HRG, MG and Alta. In addition to a number of the Club’s most prestigious named trophies the ‘Set’ also competes for class awards.

No, you are not seeing things..Race 2 Silverstone Trophy for Special Pre-War Sports Cars & Fox & Nicholl Trophy for large capacity Standard & Modified Pre-War Sports Cars (VSCC Set 3)

This is a monstrous line up of large capacity Pre-War sports cars going head to head in a battle of the titans with the Pre-war 'specials'. Thanks to the over whelming success of the Owner Driver Mechanic Series started by John Guyatt, we have had to split the heavily over subscribed race, allowing everybody a race and giving us the privilege of watching a leviathan battle here. Neil Twymans Alfa Romeo 8C has already run this season when the VSCC participated in Motors TV live at Donington 3 weeks ago. Similarly John Guyatt enjoyed a good Donington , piping birthday girl, Sue Darbyshire to win the race in race two in his Talbot Lago.

Justin Meers in the exuberant 6 litre Cirrus aero engine GN Parker. Dudley Sterry will be holding his own in the HRS Sports which time and time again proves it has the turn of foot to beat some of the larger capacity cars.

This grid evokes the Pre-war Brooklands battle royals.
