Rain on the windscreen, spray from traffic and puddles appearing overnight… autumn driving brings a few extra challenges. 🌧️
A few small adjustments can make your journeys calmer and safer:
🌧️ LESS HURRY. MORE SPACE.
Adjust your speed to the conditions and leave at least a four-second gap in the wet—more when conditions are poor. Wet-road stopping distances are at least double those on dry roads.
💡 SEE CLEARLY. BE SEEN.
Check your wipers, screenwash and lights, and clear misted windows before moving off. Use dipped headlights in dull, wet weather so other people can see you too.
🚗 SMOOTH INPUTS. STEADIER DRIVING.
Look further ahead, ease off earlier and brake progressively. Gentle steering and acceleration help you make the most of the grip available.
💧 STANDING WATER? THINK AHEAD.
Reduce your speed before reaching surface water, without suddenly swerving. Puddles can hide potholes; if a road is flooded or you’re unsure of the depth, choose another route.
🛞 LOSING GRIP? EASE OFF.
Aquaplaning happens when water separates your tyres from the road. If the steering suddenly feels light or unresponsive, stay calm, ease off the accelerator and avoid harsh braking or sudden steering.
With the weather changing, feel free to pass this advice on to friends and family—especially newer drivers approaching their first wet winter behind the wheel. Share the post, send it privately or simply talk through the tips together. A little reminder can help someone feel more prepared. 💙
Give yourself a little more time, a little more space and one less reason to rush.
