A simple question from Mia, but a big moment for her mum.

“It’s like my little girl’s grown up.”

Learning to drive brings little milestones along the way. This time, Mia was the one behind the wheel, giving her mum a lift during her lesson.

Lovely to share a moment that shows what growing independence means to the people beside us, too.

Mia spots a parked truck ahead and works through how to move around it. She checks before moving out—a positive step—but our discussion reveals she thought she was only checking for cyclists.

That’s where understanding MSM—Mirrors, Signal, Manoeuvre—matters.

Use your mirrors to understand the position and movement of traffic behind and alongside you. Could someone already be passing? Is there space to move safely? Signal if needed, then manoeuvre when it’s safe, continuing to observe.

A mirror check gives you information to act on. Understanding what you’re looking for helps you make the decision.

This is why your observations before turning right matter.

The passing driver was heading for another right turn roughly 300 metres further along, but passed this junction while overtaking the queue—creating a potential conflict with anyone turning right here.

Before committing to your turn, check your mirrors and right blind spot again. A clear road ahead doesn’t tell you what’s coming alongside.

And if you’re passing queuing traffic, consider why those vehicles are waiting and where they might turn.

Missed the entrance to a bus lane? First, confirm its operating times. 🕒

If the restriction isn’t operating, you can cross its solid white border and move left when safe and appropriate.

Rule 141 covers when the bus-lane restriction applies.
Rule 160 gives the general guidance to keep left, with exceptions such as overtaking or turning right.

Check your mirrors and blind spot, signal as needed and move across calmly.
