🚤 Did You Know? The Bridgewater Canal changed Britain forever!

📍 Opened in 1761, it was commissioned by Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from Worsley to Manchester.

💡 The canal was engineered by James Brindley and is often considered Britain's first modern canal, helping kick-start the Industrial Revolution.

🔥 Its success cut the price of coal in Manchester by around 50%, making fuel more affordable for homes and factories.

🌉 One of its most famous engineering feats was the aqueduct carrying the canal across the River Irwell—an astonishing achievement for the 18th century.

🚢 Today, the canal stretches around 39 miles (65km), remains privately owned, and is enjoyed by boaters, walkers, cyclists and wildlife lovers across the North West.

Six healthy snacks for ducks

1. Sweetcorn
It turns out that ducks are quite partial to sweetcorn. Tinned, frozen or fresh. Obviously, remove them from the tin first.

2. Lettuce
As a nation we're guilty of throwing away a vast amount of lettuce, especially the bagged variety. Instead of consigning it to the bin, rip it into pieces and treat your local ducks. Rocket, kale and iceberg are all great choices.

3. Frozen peas
There's no need to cook them but make sure you defrost them first.

4. Oats
Flapjacks, rolled oats and even instant porridge oats will be a huge hit with ducks.

5. Seeds
Whether you buy bird seed or just seeds from the fruit and nut aisle in the supermarket, the ducks will be very grateful for these nutritious nibbles.

6. Rice
Ducks will appreciate a handful of leftover rice if you've cooked too much for your dinner. You can also use uncooked rice, both are fine.

Why is the Bridegwater Canal Orange?

The Bridgewater Canal, particularly around Worsley in Greater Manchester, is orange due to iron oxide (iron ore) leaching from old, flooded coal mines into the water. Historically, this iron-rich water from underground mine tunnels and, specifically, the Worsley Delph area continuously stained the canal a bright, rust-orange color.

Some very happy hirers from yesterday.

They did a four hour hire and managed to go over the Barton Aquaduct and then back up to Boothstown for a drink in the The Moorings
