TERMS & CONDITIONS
Effective from: September 2026
By booking or undertaking a driving lesson with Rob Mayo School of Motoring, you agree to the following Terms & Conditions.
1. Driving Licence & Legal Requirements
1.1 The pupil must be legally entitled to drive and must hold a valid UK or Northern Ireland provisional Category B driving licence before undertaking driving lessons.
1.2 The appropriate licence must be produced to the instructor when requested. If the pupil holds a photocard licence, this must be produced. If an older-style paper licence is held, suitable photographic identification, such as a passport, must also be produced.
1.3 For motorway lessons, Pass Plus or refresher training, a full valid driving licence and appropriate identification must be produced.
1.4 The pupil must immediately inform the instructor of any change to their driving entitlement, including licence revocation, suspension, medical conditions or any other matter that may affect their legal ability to drive.
1.5 The pupil must satisfy the legal eyesight requirement. They must be able to read a standard UK number plate from a minimum distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet). Glasses or contact lenses must be worn whenever required for driving.
2. Driving Lessons
2.1 Lessons will be conducted at a time and location agreed between the pupil and instructor.
2.2 The instructor reserves the right to alter the lesson route, content or duration where reasonably necessary for safety, traffic conditions, weather, road closures or the pupil’s ability.
2.3 The instructor may terminate or suspend a lesson immediately if they consider that continuing would be unsafe or unlawful.
2.4 Lessons may occasionally need to be rearranged due to circumstances beyond the instructor’s control, including vehicle breakdown, severe weather, illness, road closures or other unforeseen circumstances. Where possible, reasonable notice will be provided and the lesson will be rearranged.
3. Payment
3.1 Lessons must be paid for at the agreed rate and by the agreed payment method.
3.2 Payment for lessons must be made by the time specified by the instructor.
3.3 Any unpaid lesson fees may result in future lessons being suspended until the outstanding balance has been paid.
3.4 Lesson prices may be changed from time to time. Any price change will apply to future bookings and will be communicated to the pupil.
4. Cancellations & Rearranging Lessons
4.1 A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or rearrange a lesson.
4.2 If less than 24 hours’ notice is given, the full lesson fee may be charged.
4.3 Failure to attend a lesson without notifying the instructor will be treated as a cancellation without sufficient notice and the full lesson fee may be charged.
4.4 Cancellation or rearrangement requests should be made by telephone call or text message. The pupil should ensure that the cancellation has been received and acknowledged by the instructor.
4.5 Where a pupil is repeatedly late, cancels at short notice or fails to attend lessons, the instructor reserves the right to review or terminate future bookings.
4.6 The instructor will endeavour to provide reasonable notice when cancelling or rearranging a lesson. Where the instructor cancels a lesson, the pupil will not be charged for that cancelled lesson.
5. Punctuality & Late Arrival
5.1 Pupils should be ready at the agreed collection point at the agreed lesson time.
5.2 If a pupil arrives late, the lesson will normally still finish at the originally scheduled time and the lost time may not be recoverable.
5.3 Where the instructor is delayed, they will endeavour to provide as much notice as reasonably possible and, where practical, the lesson time will be adjusted accordingly.
6. Mobile Phones & Electronic Devices
6.1 Mobile phones must be switched off, placed on silent or otherwise secured so that they do not distract the pupil while driving.
6.2 A pupil must not use or hold a mobile phone while driving, except where its use is lawful and specifically permitted for an appropriate driving-related purpose under the instructor’s direction.
6.3 Texting, messaging, social media, taking photographs, recording videos or making non-essential calls while driving are strictly prohibited.
6.4 The instructor may require a pupil to put their phone away or secure it elsewhere in the vehicle if it is causing distraction.
6.5 The instructor may use a mobile phone or other device where necessary for navigation, lesson administration, safety or other legitimate purposes.
7. Footwear & Clothing
7.1 Pupils must wear suitable clothing and footwear that enables them to safely operate the vehicle’s pedals and controls.
7.2 Footwear should be secure, comfortable and allow proper control of the pedals.
7.3 The following are unsuitable for driving lessons and may result in a lesson being stopped or rearranged:
* Flip-flops or loose-fitting footwear
* Slippers
* High or excessively unstable heels
* Footwear that significantly restricts pedal control
* Bare feet where this would make safe control difficult
* Clothing that significantly restricts movement or visibility
7.4 The instructor has the final decision as to whether a pupil’s clothing or footwear is suitable for safe driving.
8. Eating, Drinking & Smoking
8.1 Eating while driving is not permitted during lessons.
8.2 Drinks may only be brought into the vehicle in a suitable, secure container and should not be consumed while the vehicle is moving unless the instructor considers it safe and appropriate.
8.3 Hot drinks are not permitted while the vehicle is being driven.
8.4 Smoking and va**ng are not permitted inside the training vehicle.
8.5 Pupils must not bring food or drinks into the vehicle where doing so could create a safety, hygiene or distraction issue.
8.6 Any damage, staining or excessive cleaning required as a result of food or drink may be chargeable to the person responsible.
9. Cleanliness & Damage to the Vehicle
9.1 Pupils are expected to treat the training vehicle with reasonable care and respect.

10.1 Lessons are normally conducted with the pupil and instructor only.
10.2 Additional passengers, including friends, family members or other pupils, may only attend with the instructor’s prior agreement.
10.3 The instructor may refuse a passenger where they believe their presence could distract the pupil or compromise safety.
10.4 Children may only be carried where appropriate legal requirements, seating arrangements and insurance conditions are satisfied.
11. Alcohol, Drugs & Fitness to Drive
11.1 A pupil must not undertake a driving lesson while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely.
11.2 A pupil must inform the instructor if medication or any other substance may affect their ability to drive.
11.3 The instructor reserves the right to refuse or terminate a lesson if they reasonably believe that a pupil is unfit to drive.
11.4 The full lesson fee may still be payable where a lesson cannot proceed because the pupil is unfit to drive.
12. Behaviour & Conduct
12.1 Pupils are expected to behave respectfully towards the instructor and other road users.
12.2 Abusive, threatening, intimidating, discriminatory or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.
12.3 The instructor may terminate a lesson immediately if a pupil behaves in a manner that threatens the safety or wellbeing of the instructor, pupil or any other person.
12.4 Repeated unacceptable behaviour may result in future lessons being refused.
13. Safety
13.1 The instructor’s primary responsibility is the safety of the pupil, instructor and other road users.
13.2 Pupils must follow reasonable safety instructions given by the instructor.
13.3 The instructor may intervene using the vehicle’s dual controls where necessary to prevent an accident or dangerous situation.
13.4 Pupils must not deliberately ignore safety instructions or engage in behaviour that places themselves, the instructor or others at unnecessary risk.
14. Driving Test Bookings
14.1 Pupils are responsible for ensuring that their theory and practical driving test bookings are made correctly unless an alternative arrangement has been agreed.
14.2 The instructor may provide advice regarding test readiness but the final decision to book or take a test rests with the pupil.
14.3 An instructor may advise against taking a test where they reasonably believe the pupil is not yet ready or where doing so would be unsafe.
14.4 The availability of the instructor’s vehicle for a driving test is subject to prior agreement and availability.
14.5 Any test-day vehicle hire or associated fee must be agreed before the test.
14.6 If a practical test is cancelled or rearranged at short notice, any applicable fee for use of the instructor’s vehicle may still be payable where the instructor has incurred a loss or the cancellation falls outside the agreed notice period.
15. Progress & Lesson Planning
15.1 Every pupil learns at a different rate. No guarantee can be given as to the number of lessons required to pass a driving test.
15.2 The instructor will provide honest and professional feedback regarding the pupil’s progress.
15.3 Pupils are encouraged to practise between lessons where they have access to a suitable, insured and legally compliant vehicle and an appropriate supervising driver.
15.4 Lesson plans may be adjusted according to the pupil’s progress, experience, confidence and individual learning needs.
16. Instructor Availability & Vehicle
16.1 Lessons are subject to instructor and vehicle availability.
16.2 The instructor may use a replacement or alternative vehicle where reasonably necessary, subject to appropriate insurance and legal requirements.
16.3 The instructor reserves the right to refuse use of the vehicle where a pupil’s actions or condition create a safety risk.
17. Weather & Road Conditions
17.1 Lessons may be cancelled, postponed or shortened where severe weather or road conditions make driving unsafe.
17.2 The instructor will make the final decision as to whether a lesson can safely proceed.
17.3 Where possible, cancelled lessons will be rearranged for a mutually convenient time.
