From 1 October, the process for how learner drivers can swap their driving test is changing.

The change will remove the need for learners to coordinate their availability and will make the process smoother and less stressful.

WHAT’S CHANGING

To request a swap, the first learner driver will still need to call DVSA. The second learner will then need to call DVSA on the same working day to confirm they're happy with the swap.

We can only process the swap if both learners call DVSA on the same working day.

Previously, both learners needed to be available at the same time to make the swap.

Please make your pupils aware of this change.

Thank you.

First-time Pass with 4 driving faults.

“I have been learning to drive with my instructor for the past two years, and I am genuinely very grateful for all the patience, effort and support he has given me throughout my learning journey.

When I first started, I had almost no sense of direction and found many aspects of driving very difficult to understand. I had very little awareness of the position of the car, how the car moved when turning, how to judge distances, how to use reference points, or even what I should be looking for in the mirrors. Things that might come naturally to other learners simply did not come naturally to me.

My instructor was also fairly new when I first started learning with him, so at the beginning he did not immediately realise just how differently I needed to be taught. However, once he understood where my difficulties were, he never gave up on me. Instead, he kept thinking of different ways to help me understand.

For example, whenever he introduced something new, he would sometimes ask me to stop the car and get out so that I could actually see where the car was positioned, how far it was from the kerb or other objects, and what everything looked like from outside the car. He realised that simply explaining things to me verbally was not always enough. I needed to see things for myself before I could gradually develop better judgement, spatial awareness and a feel for the car.

What I appreciate most is his patience. I know I was not always the easiest student to teach, but he never made me feel that I was too difficult or that I should give up. Over the past two years, he has continued to adapt his teaching methods according to what I needed and has always tried to find another way of explaining something when I did not understand it the first time.

His support also went beyond simply teaching me how to drive. My driving test was very early in the morning, and he knew that I needed some time to warm up before I could drive confidently and naturally. He helped me plan my final few lessons at earlier times so that I could gradually get used to waking up and driving early in the morning. On the day of my test, he also made sure that I had enough time to drive around and warm up properly before going to the test centre.

He did not just think about whether I could drive well enough for the test. He also considered my confidence, my nerves, my routine and what would help me perform at my best on the day.

Looking back over the past two years, I feel that he has done much more for me than I would normally expect from a driving instructor. The amount of thought, patience and support he has given me sometimes felt more like the support you would receive from a family member.

Thank you for never giving up on me, particularly during the times when I found things difficult. I really appreciate all the time, patience and effort you have put into teaching me and helping me get this far. I could not have asked for a more patient, understanding and supportive driving instructor.”

A tough day at the test centre yesterday, but it brought up a really important lesson.

When a student doesn't get the pass they wanted, it’s heartbreaking. But sometimes, looking back years later, a setback can actually be a blessing in disguise. It forces us to slow down and truly master our weaknesses before hitting the road completely alone.

Yesterday’s result really highlighted how different moments on the road can actually point to the exact same root cause: hesitation and forward planning. When you aren't 100% sure what's coming, it’s incredibly difficult to plan your next move in advance.

The UK driving test is officially one of the toughest in the world for a reason. Setbacks happen to the best of us, but breaking down the planning stage and building up that confidence is what turns a learner into a safe driver for life. Onwards and upwards! 🚗💪

COULD YOUR SMARTWATCH COST YOU A £200 FINE?

You know it is illegal to touch your phone while driving, but what about your wrist? The RAC warns that interacting with a smartwatch behind the wheel could land you in serious legal trouble.

Here is the quick breakdown:-

- The Legal Loophole: Smartwatches are not explicitly named in phone laws, but using them is still a distraction offence
- The Penalty: Clearing a notification or checking your wrist can bring a £100 fine and 3 points for losing control
- The Worst Case: Severe distractions can lead to much harsher careless or dangerous driving charges
- The Risk: 73% of drivers aged 17–34 own a smartwatch, making younger motorists the most vulnerable to this trap

Quick Tip: Before you start the engine, set your watch and phone to Driving Mode or Do Not Disturb. This silences notifications and completely removes the temptation to look down!

Drivers: Do you use Driving Mode on your watch, or do you find it hard to ignore the buzz? Comment below!

It's lights out and away we go... but NOT if you are on a public road!

What happens when you approach a busy crossroads and the traffic lights are completely dead? Most drivers panic, but the rule is actually simple.

According to the Highway Code, when lights fail, NOBODY HAS PRIORITY. You must treat the junction as an unmarked crossroads. That means you cannot assume anyone else will stop for you.

So, do these three things:-

1. Slow down and prepare to stop
2. Signal extra early so others know your plans
3. Creep out slowly only when it is completely safe

Be careful, watch for pedestrians whose crossing lights are also broken, and drive defensively! Share this with a learner driver who needs to know!

ARE YOU TEACHING YOUR CHILD TO DRIVE?

We know you want the best for your kids. You have years of accident-free driving experience. But being a safe everyday driver is not the same as being "test-ready."

Here is why relying solely on parents for driving lessons can be risky:-

- The Hidden Mistakes: Professional instructors are trained to spot tiny, subconscious bad habits before they become permanent muscle memory
- Outdated Rules: Road laws and test requirements change constantly over the years
- Test Standards: Safe, experienced drivers often do not meet strict modern test criteria
- Bad Habits: Over 50% of parents admit they fear passing on dangerous driving habits

Private practice is fantastic for gaining confidence, but it needs professional eyes to catch those small errors before test day. Let a qualified instructor handle the test standards while you help them practice the basics!

Parents: What is the one driving habit you hope your kids don't copy from you? Let us know below!

Roundabouts + Long Vehicles = Give 'Em Room! Large trucks and HGVs need extra space to turn safely.

1. Don't pass: Stay back and never pull up alongside them in a roundabout.
2. Expect lane sharing: They often need two lanes to make the turn.
3. Watch the swing: The back of the trailer will swing wide.

Let's look out for each other!
