Google offers 'right to forget' form
Last updated 7 hours ago

Technology correspondent Dave Lee explains how the controversial system will work
Google has launched a service to allow Europeans to ask for personal data to be removed from online search results.

The move comes after a landmark European Union court ruling earlier this month, which gave people the "right to be forgotten".

Links to "irrelevant" and outdated data should be erased on request, it said.

Google said it would assess each request and balance "privacy rights of the individual with the public's right to know and distribute information".

"When evaluating your request, we will look at whether the results include outdated information about you, as well as whether there's a public interest in the information," Google says on the form which applicants must fill in.

Case study - Brad from Derbyshire
"The story was relating to an offence of drinking and driving. A criminal conviction.

"But has it got any public interest that somebody was convicted of that several years ago? I don't think so."

Google said it would look at information about "financial scams, professional malpractice, criminal convictions, or public conduct of government officials" while deciding on the request.

Earlier this month, the BBC learned that more than half of the requests sent to Google from UK individuals involved convicted criminals.

This included a man convicted of possessing child abuse images who had also asked for links to pages about his conviction to be wiped.

'Fraudulent requests'
Google said information would start to be removed from mid-June and any results affected by the removal process would be flagged to searchers.

Decisions about data removal would be made by people rather than the algorithms that govern almost every other part of Google's search system.

Disagreements about whether information should be removed or not will be overseen by national data protection agencies.

Europe's data regulators are scheduled to meet on 3-4 June. The "right to forget" will be discussed at that gathering and could result in a statement about how those watchdogs will handle appeals.

Analysis - Rory Cellan-Jones
"Much of the comment online has been deeply sceptical about the right to be forgotten, particularly in the US where the First Amendment guaranteeing free speech would make this kind of ruling impossible.

Some have pointed out that information won't be removed from google.com, just your local version of the search engine, while others question the sheer practicality."

Information will only disappear from searches made in Europe. Queries piped through its sites outside the region will still show the contested data.

On 13 May, the EU's court of justice ruled that links to "irrelevant" and outdated data on search engines should be erased on request.

The case was brought by a Spanish man who complained that an auction notice of his repossessed home, which appeared on Google's search results, infringed his privacy.

Less innovation?
On Friday, Google said that EU citizens who want their private details removed from the search engine will be able to do so by filling out an online form.

However, they will need to provide links to the material they want removed, their country of origin, and a reason for their request.

Individuals will also have to attach a valid photo identity.

"Google often receives fraudulent removal requests from people impersonating others, trying to harm competitors, or improperly seeking to suppress legal information," the firm said.

"To prevent this kind of abuse, we need to verify identity."

However, in an interview given to the Financial Times, Google boss Larry Page said that although the firm would comply with the ruling, it could damage innovation.

He also said the regulation would give cheer to repressive regimes.

Mr Page said he regretted not being "more involved in a real debate" about privacy in Europe, and that the company would now try to "be more European".

But, he warned, "as we regulate the internet, I think we're not going to see the kind of innovation we've seen".

Mr Page added that the ruling would encourage "other governments that aren't as forward and progressive as Europe to do bad things".

People keen to get data removed from Google's index must:

• Provide weblinks to the relevant material

• Name their home country

• Explain why the links should be removed

• Supply photo ID to help Google guard against fraudulent applications

Apple agrees to $3bn Beats deal

Beats is best known for its headphones which have been gaining popularity
Apple has confirmed it will buy headphone maker and music-streaming service provider Beats Electronics.

The deal is worth a total of $3bn (£1.8bn), and is thought to be Apple's biggest acquisition to date.

As part of the acquisition, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre will join the technology firm.

Apple boss Tim Cook said the deal would allow the firm to "continue to create the most innovative music products and services in the world".

Beats was founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and the hip-hop star Dr Dre and until recently was best known for its headphones.

It started a subscription-based music streaming service earlier this year.

Apple has its own iTunes store, the world's largest music download service. It launched iTunes Radio last year.

But despite having been an early pioneer of digital music, the Californian firm has been facing increased competition from subscription services such as Spotify, Pandora and Rdio.

However, Beats' music service only has about 110,000 subscribers, compared with Spotify's 10 million.

The deal with Beats marks a departure for Apple, which has a reputation for developing new products in-house, rather than buying up smaller firms - a method preferred by rivals Google.

Apple said it would buy Beats for an initial $2.6bn (£1.6bn), and approximately $400m (£239m) "that will vest over time".

Commenting on the deal, Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine said: "I've always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple."

"The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple's unmatched ability to marry culture and technology.

"Apple's deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special."

Apple analyst Jim Dalrymple hinted that it may be Mr Iovine's talent that the technology firm is after.

Writing on his website The Loop, Mr Dalrymple said: "In my opinion, Jimmy is going to play an important role going forward.

"Maybe not that you always see, but he'll be there".

The Heartbleed Bug

The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).

The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users.

What leaks in practice?

We have tested some of our own services from attacker's perspective. We attacked ourselves from outside, without leaving a trace. Without using any privileged information or credentials we were able steal from ourselves the secret keys used for our X.509 certificates, user names and passwords, instant messages, emails and business critical documents and communication.

How to stop the leak?

As long as the vulnerable version of OpenSSL is in use it can be abused. Fixed OpenSSL has been released and now it has to be deployed. Operating system vendors and distribution, appliance vendors, independent software vendors have to adopt the fix and notify their users. Service providers and users have to install the fix as it becomes available for the operating systems, networked appliances and software they use.

Microsoft unveils Kinect for Windows hardware - version 2:

Microsoft is inching closer to delivering the second version of its Kinect for Windows sensor, and is showing off what the final hardware will look like.
Microsoft is inching closer toward releasing the second version of its Kinect for Windows sensor.
On Thursday, the company posted images of the new Kinect for Windows v2 sensor itself, as well as the hub and power supply for the device.
The second-generation Kinect for Windows sensor looks a lot like the Kinect for Xbox One, except that it says "Kinect" on the top panel, and the Xbox stylized green "x" is a "simple, more understated power indicator," according to a new blog post. The image of the new Kinect for Windows sensor is embedded in this post above.
The new Kinect for Windows hub and power supply are pictured below. The hub, the top image, accepts three connections: The sensor, USB 3.0 output to PC and power. The power supply, which supports voltages from 100 to 240 volts, is the bottom image.
Microsoft launched its closed Kinect for Windows v2 developer program last summer. Developers received an alpha version of the sensor hardware, along with early access to the software development kit, and a promise of a final version of the Kinect for Windows v2 hardware at no additional cost.
At that time, company officials said the second generation Kinect for Windows product would be available by summer 2014.
Preview participants are experimenting on a range of business and consumer applications that might make use of the updated Kinect. Here's what some Razorfish developers built as a proof-of-concept with the preview hardware and software.
Microsoft released the first-generation Kinect for Windows product in early 2012.

Samsung Galaxy S5 – Review:
Samsung has officially announced about unveiling its Galaxy S5 at Mobile world congress, and we finally have a confirmation of the Korean company’s next flagship smart phone.
Here are some precise details about it.
It’s just a powerhouse:
Samsung isn’t shy when it comes to the loading of top-of-the-range phones with headline-grabbing specs and Galaxy S5 is no different from any of those. It is a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, which runs at a blistering 2.5GHz. This chip paired with 2GB RAM means the phone shouldn’t have any bother smoothly running any app you install in it. One thing to note is that 64-bit that’s probably going to be a feature of next year’s Samsung flagship.
The phone comes with latest Android 4.4 KitKat and a new version of TouchWiz interface. There is no word about whether it is a stock Android Google Play or Nexus edition which will be available.
2800mAh battery should give the S5 enough quality to use all day with 21 hours of talk time and the previous versions are swappable.
You also get a choice between 16GB and 32GB expandable storage and there is a microUSD 3.0 port for quick transfer speeds.
Whereas when you consider about connectivity, there is both 4G LTE and fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 2X2 MiMo and also a feature called Download booster which uses both Wi-Fi and 4G simultaneously to download with higher speed.
Dimpled & Waterproof:
The rumors claiming the S5 would have a metal body turned out to be hot air – Samsung has stuck with polycarbonate build. From hands-on time we can say it is the best built quality a Galaxy S phone has been offering so far. The dimpled, matte soft-touch back is much good to look and hold on to than the previous versions.
Major improvement from the previous one is that S4 is IP67 waterproofing and S5 into line with Sony’s Xperia phones. It is water and dust proof which you can dunk the handset to water for more than 30 minutes and it won’t stop a bit.
The vital statistics of weight and size are 145g and 142X72.5X8.1mm respectively also it has the skins including Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold.
Screen:
Speculation about S5 toting a quad HD 2560X1440 screen which always seemed to be touch far-fetched, so we are not surprised that Samsung had retained a full HD 1080p resolution instead. The AMOLED screen is larger than that of S4 at 5.1 inch.
Fun @ Finger Tips:
It is fit with a finger tip scanner which serves swiftly unlock the phone, online mobile payment with fingerprint recognition and heart-rate sensor which is first time seen in a smart phone with Samsung’s S Health App.
Autofocus:
16MP camera comes with LED flash, a new advanced HDR mode and post-shot focusing which will take two images every time when you click the shutter. This means that after the shot is taken, you can choose a defocused or sharply focused image. But it is super-fast autofocus of up to 0.3 seconds.
There is a front camera of 2.1MP which is for video chatting and selfies.
Fitness:
With the heart-rate app it will keep you measured with the heart beat rate and will make sure you are fit and healthy each time when you move your fingers on to the app. The price is around £600 in UK!!

31/01/2014

Facebook has reportedly announced its much-anticipated visual news reader app for iOS. The app, dubbed 'Paper', is the first one out of Facebook Creative Labs and intends to deliver human and algorithm-curated full-screen articles and photos in categories a user selects like Tech, LOL, and Pop Culture.

According to Tech Crunch, Paper would be launched on the iOS platform to everyone in the US on February 3, just a day before the social networking site turns 10.

Paper is the outcome of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who had envisioned Facebook to become the 'modern day's newspaper, fully customized as per the reader's need.

Once downloaded, the Paper app welcomes with a reimagined interface for the News Feed with the top half of the screen showing big photos and videos, while the bottom half shows status updates and link stories. Users can swipe from right to left to browse through the stories and tapping on a story would ''unfold'' it with a delightful animation and lead to take up the full screen where videos auto-play, while pinching the story, folds it back up and returns to the Paper feed.

The report said that users can choose the content of the visual paper by adding sections to it, which include, 'Score' (sports), 'Headlines' (world news), 'Cute' (BuzzFeed-style adorable animals), 'Planet' (sustainability and earth p**n), among others and users can also share their own stories.
