One in Four Imminent Car Buyers Plans to Go Electric
More than a quarter of UK drivers planning to replace their car within a year intend to buy fully electric, according to research for Kwik Fit.
The Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults found 27% of these prospective buyers favour an EV, while 54% intend to choose electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid power.
Across all drivers surveyed, 18% said their next car would be electric, compared with 7% currently owning one. However, purchase intentions do not guarantee sales or establish when ownership might double.
Range concerns and an inability to charge at home were each cited by 35% of drivers as barriers to switching. Range anxiety has eased from 41% in 2023.
Policy uncertainty also appears influential: 30% of those planning an EV said consultation on relaxing the ZEV mandate made them less likely to proceed.
The findings suggest growing interest in electrification, with charging access remaining a practical obstacle.
