Toyota Supra Recalled Because Its BMW Starter Could Catch Fire

The Toyota Supra has been recalled in America, but the problem is not Toyota’s: it is BMW hardware.

BMW is recalling 318,495 US vehicles after regulators warned an engine starter could overheat and potentially cause a fire. The campaign covers certain 3 Series, 4 Series, X3 and X4 models, alongside the BMW-developed Supra, whose platform and engines are shared with the Z4. Dealers will replace affected starters free of charge.

It is not BMW’s only recent starter-related action. Another US campaign covers 29,119 plug-in hybrids after water could enter the starter relay, causing corrosion, a short circuit and possible fire. Earlier recalls involved internal wear creating metallic debris inside starter components.

The precise production dates and failure history for this latest, larger recall still require confirmation from NHTSA documents. No corresponding UK recall has been announced.

The lesson? Shared engineering spreads development costs, performance and, occasionally, the recall notices too.

Ford Sold Volvo to Geely. Now Geely Is Returning to Rescue a Ford Factory

Ford sold Volvo to Geely in 2010. Sixteen years later, the Chinese group is returning to help fill Ford’s underused Spanish factory.

The companies announced on 23 July that they will form a joint venture at Ford’s Valencia plant, currently operating at only around 26 per cent of capacity. Ford will own 66 per cent and Geely 34 per cent.

From 2028, the factory is expected to build five vehicles: three Fords, including a jointly developed multi-energy crossover, plus two Geely electric SUVs. For Ford, sharing the plant and development costs could safeguard jobs and improve its struggling European economics. For Geely, Spanish production creates a European manufacturing base and reduces exposure to tariffs imposed on Chinese-built EVs.

It is another sign that underused Western factories are becoming beachheads for China’s expanding car industry. However, regulatory approval is still required, while prices, specifications, UK availability and production plans remain unconfirmed.

But will it even be cherished like an Edsel is today?

At the end of the day, much can be forgiven about a car if it looks good. The thing is, that's one thing the Edsel and Cybertruck don't have going for them.

Aston Martin Vanquish 25 Celebrates V12 Flagship’s Silver Anniversary

Aston Martin is celebrating 25 years of the Vanquish with a limited-run special that changes the tailoring, not the firepower.

Created by Q by Aston Martin, the Vanquish 25 will be restricted to 50 cars worldwide: 25 Coupes and 25 Volantes, offered with two or four seats. Each receives Skye Silver paint, metal-foil detailing, stainless-steel side strakes, unique badging, wheel highlights and a specially trimmed cabin with embroidered seats and a bright-red starter button.

Mechanically, it remains the current Vanquish, meaning a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 producing 835PS and 1,000Nm, driving it from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds and on to 214mph.

The original Vanquish appeared at Geneva in 2001, making this a neatly timed tribute across three generations. It will debut at Monterey Car Week in August, with deliveries from late 2026. Pricing remains conspicuously unannounced, but “limited to 50” rarely translates as “sensibly affordable” for even the keenest Aston enthusiast.
