Soot doesn't pick and choose what it lands on.

After a fire it's on the plasterboard, the timber, the metalwork and the flooring. Normally that means different treatments for each one or stripping out whatever won't come clean.

Same laser handles the lot. Settings change, the method doesn't.

"The prism in the head doesn't appear to be working."

That's a real enquiry, more or less word for word. We get a version of it most weeks.

A machine that was cleaning fine stops producing a pattern. Or the finish goes uneven. Or it runs a few minutes then shuts down.

Usually it's a quick fix.

→ The protective window takes debris from everything you clean. Once it's coated the performance drops.

→ A machine that runs then stops is often protecting itself from heat. That gets mistaken for a dying laser more than anything else.

→ Genuine source failure is rarer than people assume.

We service machines we didn't sell. Our engineer is full time and in house, we hold the parts here, and around 90% of repairs are done inside 48 hours.

Not a job we get asked for, but a good test ✨

The lettering and milled edge on a 20p are only fractions of a millimetre deep, so if the settings are even slightly off you take the detail with the dirt and it shows up straight away.

Same reason it matters on anything where the detail has to survive the clean, which is most heritage and conservation work.

A conservation officer won't let you near a listed facade with a grit pot. That's usually how these conversations start.

Laser cleaning gets specified on carved stone because it removes the contamination rather than the substrate. That means the detail survives.

But it isn't risk-free and the risk isn't what people expect.

→ Stone can lighten or shift once the crust comes off. How much depends on the stone and the setup.

→ Limestone, sandstone and marble aren't interchangeable.

→ Old consolidants and earlier cleaning change how a surface responds. They're invisible until you start.

→ The test panel decides it.

That's why we test before committing on heritage stone. Not because the method's in doubt but because the stone has as much say in the outcome as we do.

Most of what you'll read about laser cleaning is written by people selling it. So here's the other half.

→ It only cleans what it can see, so deep bores and blind cavities are difficult
→ Laser lifts lichen off stone, but it won't stop it returning
→ Glass and polished metal are harder to work on
→ Heavy multi-layer coatings take more passes than people expect
→ It needs a competent operator. Scorched timber is a setup outcome, not a failure of the method

None of that makes it a poor process. It makes it a specific one, and the kit's improving fast.

Getting the soot out is easy. Keeping the carving is the skill.

Anything that works by abrasion will reach into the recesses, but it can soften the edges and undercuts on the way through. Chemicals get in too, though they can be hard to stop at the right point and residue tends to sit in the tight spots afterwards.

A laser can be tuned to work on the soot rather than the stone. How close it stays to that depends on the settings and on the person holding it.

Once that detail's gone, it's gone.

Congratulations to Wokingham and Emmbrook Walking Football Team ⚽ Bisham Cup winners 2026 🏆

Won on penalties (the only proper way to win a final).

LaserTec is proud to sponsor the team. Co-founder Mike Allpress is in the squad, front and centre.

Bringing the results on and off the pitch.

Well played all 👏

One of the most common myths we hear about laser cleaning is that it's dangerous.

The word "laser" makes people cautious. It should. A Class 4 laser is powerful and demands respect.

But "capable of causing damage" and "actually dangerous on site" are two different things.

On a properly-run job:
→ Named Laser Safety Officer, accountable
→ Controlled exclusion zones
→ Wavelength-rated PPE for anyone in the zone
→ Fume extraction at source
→ Documented parameters

Managed like that, the risks are well understood and well handled.

The word "dangerous" is really doing a different job. It's asking whether the people running the equipment know what they're doing.

Smoke damage carries a hidden cost. Most of it is on the surface, not in the substrate ✨

The plasterboard is usually intact. The timber is usually sound. The metalwork is usually fine.

The traditional insurance-claim response strips and replaces anyway. Weeks of downtime, thousands in material cost, most of it for surfaces that were structurally fine to begin with.

Laser cleaning changes the calculation:
→ Soot vaporises off the surface
→ Substrate stays in place
→ Space stays workable during the clean
→ Claim value drops

You can't buy panelling like this any more.

Look at what's underneath the varnish:

→ Raised centres
→ Moulded stiles
→ The profile of the mouldings
→ Tool marks left by whoever built it a hundred plus years ago

For asset owners with period joinery, the choice on refurbishment usually comes down to two options:

1. Replace it with modern joinery that looks similar but isn't the same and lose the fabric that gives the building its value ❌

2. Find a way to strip the coating without damaging the substrate underneath ✅

Laser cleaning is one of the few methods that can do the second. The coating vaporises. The wood underneath stays as it was. Nothing sanded off, softened or chemically soaked.

Restored, not replaced.
