In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double that required for stopping on dry roads. This is because your tyres have less grip on the road.

In wet weather:

- You should keep well back from the vehicle in front. This will increase your ability to see and plan ahead.

- If the steering becomes unresponsive, it could mean water is affecting your vehicle's grip on the road.

- Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

- The rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen.

- Be aware of the dangers of spilt diesel that will make the surface very slippery.

- Take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders.

Winter doesn’t just make journeys colder, it changes how your car behaves. Rubber stiffens in low temperatures, rain and slush reduce traction, and black ice steals grip without warning. Before you set off, check tread depth and pressure and look for cuts or bulges. Those few minutes restore the grip you’re counting on when the road surprises you. Arrive in control this winter.

Are you confident when coupling up your trailer or caravan?
Don’t forget to:
✅ Make sure the hitch is in a good condition
✅ Look out for any rust or cracks
✅ Pay attention to all the nuts and bolts and tighten any that loose
✅ Give the hitch and towbar a good clean and make sure the friction pads are clean. If they’re damaged or too dirty, replace them so they work as intended while travelling.
✅ Carryout a lift test to ensure the trailer or caravan is connected. Tow ball and connections
Check that:
• the trailer is correctly coupled to the towball or pin - follow the manufacturer’s advice
• the coupling height is correct
• the 7 or 13 core cable and plug is not damaged

Use a breakaway cable or secondary coupling. This engages the trailer’s brakes (if fitted) or stops the trailer if it becomes detached from the car.
