Today (9 September) the DVSA have published the statistics for driving test waiting times in August on GOV.UK.

There are some really positive trends in this month’s statistics:

the driving test pass rate is at its highest level since May 2021
we conducted a record number of driving tests in August 2026, higher than any other August on record
driving test waiting times are continuing to reduce
Although there is still much more work to be done, these stats are a positive move forward.

We know that providing more tests is one of the key ways we can help reduce waiting times and we are continuing to do this month after month.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve conducted more than 2.13 million driving tests, the highest rolling 12-month figure on record.

Alongside the pass rate remaining above 50%, we are making real headway to bring down waiting times.

This is a real testament for the hard work and commitment Driving Instructors and their pupils are putting in to be test ready. Thank you for making sure their pupils are taking their test at the right time.

Tests booked and taken within 7 weeks
As part of our commitment to being more open with you, we're expanding what we publish. Alongside the existing set of waiting times data, we're now publishing availability data which shows the percentage of tests taken within 7-week brackets at national, regional and driving test centre levels.

This includes how many learners are waiting less than 7 weeks between booking and taking their test and how many are waiting more than 24 weeks.

By publishing more detailed information at national, regional and driving test centre level, we're making it easier to understand where pressure points remain, where improvements are being made and where further action is needed.

We know that better data on its own does not reduce waiting times. However, what it does do is help us target the right interventions in the right places.

🚗 THINK Road Safety research reveals dangerous misconceptions about drug driving among young men.

Many are likely to underestimate the risks: 41% think it’s OK to drive after taking drugs if you feel fine.

As driving instructors, you can address this perception and the moment-by-moment risk assessment that leads to drug driving. Our latest guidance provides research-backed strategies to challenge overconfidence and make legal consequences feel real.

Think you know your Pedestrian crossings?

Pedestrian Crossings – The Basics

• Puffin crossings – signals that detect pedestrians and adjust time to help them to cross

• Toucan crossing – for pedestrians and cyclists

• Equestrian crossing – for Horses

• Pelican crossing – older style include flashing green man and flashing amber traffic light

• Zebra Crossing – back & white lines in road – uncontrolled

• Parallel crossing – like a Zebra crossing but alongside cyclists and/or horses

15/06/2026

As you know, from 12 May 2026 only learner drivers have been allowed to book, change, swap or cancel a car driving test.

This rule change has given us new powers to take direct action against those who misuse the booking service. And we are using those powers to make things fairer for all learner drivers.

Cancelling driving tests
We have started to cancel driving test that we have identified as being booked or managed outside of the new rules.

So far, we have cancelled 450 tests.

They were cancelled as they were booked using a payment card that has been used to pay for lots of driving tests for different learner drivers. This means that the tests were not booked by the learner driver taking the test. Our terms and conditions allow us to cancel tests where this happens.

We are continually monitoring the booking service and will keep cancelling tests where we have evidence of bookings made in breach of the law and our terms and conditions.

This will not stop.

We have placed 4,034 online booking suspensions on the system
A suspension means the driving licence holder can no longer book or manage tests online. They will need to call our customer service centre instead.

We’ve also updated our guidance to confirm that a suspension stays in place for 12 months.

We have reported apps to Apple and Google
We have successfully removed 17 apps from on the Apple and Google platforms that break the terms and conditions of our booking service. We will continue to monitor the platforms and report any new apps to have them removed as well.

Do not use unofficial apps or websites to find or book a test slot.
Do not book a test through anyone on social media.
Only ever use GOV.UK - it is free and secure.
If they ignore this advice, the consequences are serious.

DVSA can suspend their online booking access. Their test can be cancelled. They could lose hundreds of pounds with no way to get it back.

And once they hand over their personal data to a scammer, they have no control over what happens to it.

From today, pupils can only move their test to one of the 3 nearest driving test centres to where their test is currently booked.

For existing bookings, this applies to wherever the test is booked today - not the original booking location.

For any changes made from today, the 3 nearest centres are calculated from the booked test centre at the time of any change.

Why we're doing this
Our priority is to stop learners being exploited by third parties, put them in control of their driving test and make the process fairer by clamping down on businesses that resell tests at inflated prices.

Today's location restrictions will help deter bookings at centres where learners do not intend to sit their test.

A reminder of the other changes already in place
From 31 March 2026, learners are limited to 2 changes per booking.

From 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel their own test. It’s now against the law for you or anyone else to book a test for your pupils. You’re also not allowed to change, swap or cancel a driving test for someone else.

Since 12 May, we have suspended 3,605 accounts from booking online, acted against bot use and reported apps to store providers for removal.

We will continue to monitor misuse of the system and take action against those doing so.

04/06/2026

As you know, since 12 May 2026, only learner drivers have been allowed to book, change, swap or cancel a car driving test.

The new terms and conditions for the booking service mean that learner drivers are not allowed to:

use unofficial apps, websites or services that scan the driving test booking service looking for appointments
give someone else their details so they can book a car driving test for them

Learner drivers are being emailed to remind them to stop using any apps or tools that search for driving tests for them. They must only use GOV.UK to manage their booking.

We’re reminding them that if they use an app or tool that searches for driving tests, we will:

suspend their ability to manage their test online – they will then only be able to make changes or book a new test by phone
cancel their booking
Our top priority is making the system fairer for all learners.

We are continuously monitoring activity and where misuse is clearly identified – including cases where a learner has not legitimately booked their test or where our terms and conditions are breached – we will take appropriate action, up to and including cancellation of the test.

We’re also reminding learners about the dangers of trying to book or get an earlier test through anyone on social media.

Here are 3 simple things:

do not use unofficial apps or websites to find or book a test slot
do not book a test through anyone on social media
only ever use GOV.UK – it is free and secure
