What a fantastic way to spend this morning!

I was honoured to be invited by Associate Professor Peter Metcalfe to join seven other judges at the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) on Blackfriars Street, Hereford.

As someone who owns and delivers a national awards programme through the Loo of the Year Awards, it was particularly humbling to be asked to bring the perspective of an awards-presenting organisation. I was able to share what I would look for in an award โ€“ not only an eye-catching and prestigious design, but also practicality, quality, sustainability, the choice of materials, and whether it was something I would be proud to present to award winners year after year.

The challenge? Ten teams of engineering students had been tasked with taking an award from concept to creation, designing a trophy for a prestigious Malvern Awards Ceremony.

Our role as judges was to put each team through their paces โ€“ rather like The Apprentice! We assessed their prototypes, questioned their design choices, explored why they selected particular materials, discussed how they responded to design changes, and evaluated their overall engagement and professionalism. We then had to decide whether we would place an order for their award design for one year, two years, multiple years... or not at all.

I was genuinely impressed by the creativity, innovation and passion shown by every team. Seeing these talented students apply their engineering knowledge to solve a real-world design challenge was both inspiring and encouraging.

The final results, based on the combined judges' scores and orders, will be announced on Friday, and I wish every team the very best of luck.

It was a real privilege to be involved and to give a little time back to support the next generation of engineers as they continue their degree studies. Opportunities like this remind us just how important it is for industry and education to work together, helping students gain valuable commercial insight while inspiring the innovators and engineers of tomorrow.

๐Ÿ“ฆโœจ From cardboard boxes to better school washrooms! โœจ๐Ÿ“ฆ
Yesterday, Loo of The Year Awards Ltd and our fantastic industry partners returned to Madley Primary School to continue our Loo Ambassadors project with eight inspiring Year 3 pupils and Lee Batstone the Head Teacher.
The children shared their washroom wish list, discussing everything from cubicle design, washroom fragrances and healthy bladder and bowel education to sustainability and creating toilets where every child feels safe, comfortable and confident.
As it was Cardboard Box Day, the pupils also explored creativity, recycling and the circular economy. Stuart Hands MBA Hands from Tork, an Essity brand, explained how recycled cardboard is transformed into paper hand towels for school washrooms, supporting both sustainability and Eco Schools initiatives.
A huge thank you to Mark Wintle (P-Waveยฎ), Brendon Dunham (Dunhams Washroom Systems Ltd ), Vicky Stables (Healthy B's โ€“ Bowels, Bladders and Bathrooms) and Professor Charlotte Haines Lyon (York St John University) for inspiring the children and helping turn their ideas into possibilities.
Listening to children, collaborating with industry and thinking outside the box, that is how we create the washrooms of the future. ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿ’™

What a privilege it was to represent the British Toilet Association on Good Morning Britain this morning.
I had the pleasure of meeting Lee East, whose personal story about being fined for urinating in a lay-by due to his poor prostate health has highlighted a much bigger issue, the ongoing loss of public toilets across the UK. With around 50% of public toilets having closed in the last 10 years, it is a conversation that urgently needs to be had.
During the discussion, I highlighted that 14 million people in the UK, almost 1 in 5 of us, live with bowel or bladder problems, while around 3 million men are affected by an enlarged prostate. These figures alone demonstrate just one group of people who rely on access to public toilets every day. When you also consider older people, pregnant women, families with young children, disabled people, and those with other medical conditions, it becomes clear that accessible public toilets are not a luxury, they are an essential public service.
This message aligns so closely with the work we do through the Loo of The Year Awards Ltd. For nearly four decades, the Awards have been championing the importance of providing clean, safe, accessible and well-managed toilet facilities, while recognising those organisations that invest in raising standards. Education and awareness have always been at the heart of what we do.
The British Toilet Association has also been campaigning for many years, calling on the Government to develop a national strategic plan to improve and increase the provision of public toilets. Unfortunately, there is currently no legal requirement for local councils to provide or fund public toilets, leaving many authorities unable to prioritise this essential service despite the growing need.
It was wonderful to meet Lee and hear his story firsthand. His courage in speaking out is helping to shine a light on an issue that affects millions of people every day.
A huge thank you to Suzannah Reid and Ed Balls for welcoming us onto the sofa and giving this important issue a national platform. Every conversation helps raise awareness that access to clean, safe public toilets is about health, dignity, inclusion and enabling people to live their lives without fear or embarrassment.
Together, we can keep this conversation moving forward and continue making the case that public toilets are not a luxury, they are a necessity.

What a day yesterday turned out to be! ๐ŸŒž

We were up bright and early and off to London for a really positive meeting with a potential new client โ€“ fingers crossed for what comes next! ๐Ÿคž

From there, it was straight to the River Thames to join the fantastic Phil Smith and The Hill Club for their Cleaning & Facilities Management Summer Networking Event. Wow... what an afternoon! Sunshine, the beautiful London skyline, plenty of laughter, great conversations and the chance to catch up with so many lovely people from across the industry. Sometimes business networking doesn't feel like work at all!

As if that was not enough, the day finished with something very special as we celebrated a belated birthday for Jane Kibble our wonderful Awards Manager at the Loo of The Year Awards Ltd, with a trip to ABBA Voyage. What an experience! The music, the atmosphere and the technology were simply incredible โ€“ there was definitely plenty of singing along! ๐ŸŽถโœจ

Today it is back to Herefordshire, catching up on everything that accumulated while we were away, before heading straight back out this evening for the Herefordshire Means Business Ltd 10th Anniversary celebrations.

Some days are busy... and then there are days like yesterday! We are feeling very grateful for the opportunities, the people we meet along the way and the chance to enjoy a little fun too. Here is to making the most of every moment! ๐Ÿ˜Š
