Some facts for you:

The stopping distance gap: Tires with 1.6mm of tread take up to 44% longer to stop on wet roads than tires with 3mm of tread.

Legal limits: The legal minimum tread depth in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread.

The coin test: Placing a 20p coin into the main tread grooves tests depth; if the outer band is visible, the tire is likely illegal.

Wear indicators: Tires have built-in tread wear indicator bars; when the tread is flush with these bars, the tire must be replaced.
