1.6mm is the legal limit…
But tyre performance drops sharply once tread depth falls below 3mm.
That means longer stopping distances and a much higher risk of aquaplaning in wet conditions.

October is Tyre Safety Month—the perfect reminder to take five minutes and give your tyres a quick health check before winter sets in! 🚗🌧️
Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle touching the road, so keeping them in top condition is essential for safety, fuel efficiency, and grip.
Here is what to look out for during your check:
🪙Tread Depth: The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
Quick Test: Insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, your tread is above the legal limit. If you can see the outer band, your tyres may be illegal and unsafe.
💨Tyre Pressure: Under- or over-inflated tyres affect braking distance, handling, and fuel consumption. Check your pressure when tyres are cold using a digital gauge or air pump at a local petrol station. Look up your recommended PSI/BAR in your car manual or inside the driver's door frame.
🛞Overall Condition: Inspect the rubber for visible damage, such as bulges, cracks, cuts, embedded nails, or uneven wear (which often points to wheel alignment issues).
✅Valve Caps: Make sure all valve caps are securely fitted to keep dirt and moisture out of the valve mechanism.
❗Don't forget to check your spare tyre too! If you spot any damage or deep cracks, head to a local garage or tyre specialist for a professional opinion.
