DVSA Update: Changes to the Motorcycle Theory Test Coming Soon

From 29 October 2026, DVSA is updating the rider theory test to make it more accessible and bring it in line with the car theory test.

What’s Changing
The theory test still has 2 parts: Multiple‑choice questions & Hazard perception

But within the multiple‑choice section, the written case studies are being replaced with a short video clip.

Learner riders will watch the clip and answer 3 questions based on what they’ve seen.

This update is designed to make the test more accessible — especially for riders who are neurodivergent, including those with Dyslexia, Autism or similar learning differences.

The pass mark, number of questions, and the knowledge you need to learn are staying exactly the same.

How to Prepare
DVSA’s official learning materials have now been updated to include revision questions using the new video format — perfect for anyone training ahead of the change.

Motorcycle Theory Test: What You Need to Know

Getting ready for your motorcycle theory test? Here’s a quick guide to what’s involved — plus some tried‑and‑tested tips to help you pass with confidence.

The theory test has two parts:
🟦 Multiple‑choice questions on road rules, safety, and riding knowledge
🟦 Hazard perception where you spot developing hazards in real‑time clips

You’ll need to pass both to move on to your practical training.

Hints & Tips to Help You Smash It

💡 Use the official DVSA app
It’s the closest thing to the real test and helps you learn the exact question style.

💡 Practise hazard perception daily
Short sessions work best. Focus on spotting hazards early — not just reacting.

💡 Know your road signs and markings
These are easy marks if you revise them properly.

💡 Understand motorcycle‑specific rules
Filtering, lane positioning, stopping distances, and protective gear all come up.

💡 Don’t rush the clips
Click when you first see a hazard developing — not when it becomes obvious.

💡 Stay calm on test day
Take your time and read each question carefully.

It is not currently a requirement to hold a motorcycle theory before a CBT course. However, you must have awareness and knowledge of the highway code and different road layouts.
