Can’t beat a specialist wheel and tyre fitter.

I refurbished all 4 alloys via my local OPC late last year. On return of the car there was some unwanted handling characteristics at low speeds (20-25mph). Very minor but enough to annoy me over time. Car would kangaroo backwards and forwards.

The tyres were fitted by whoever did the wheel refurb work (via OPC) and so was the wheel balancing. After returning the vehicle to my local OPC for assessment they checked all the wheel balancing and found it to be off so did them all again themselves. The issue was improved but not completely.

My character flaw is that small things annoy me especially when you pay top dollar and have high expectations of “good”.

The final chapter of the story is that a specialist wheel shop (Blackboots though now owned by ProTyre) managed to balance all my wheels again using at times 10g less on a wheel.

In this world of automation, you don’t just follow what the machine says you need to do. Work with the machines as a skilled human and make adjustments and the final call.

Just like wheel alignment the machines used to balance wheels need constant calibration by trained experts. I bet a busy specialist wheel and tyre shop has better calibrated wheel and tyre machines than your local OPC.

I can report the car drives smooth at all speeds just as it should be. OPC in general are not the best for wheel and tyre work, nor should you expect them to be as that isn’t their area of expertise.
