When considering fleet electrification almost all clients find that electric travel running costs are significantly lower than traditional fuel.

However, it does mean that electricity consumption will increase. Companies with larger fleets can see electricity consumption increase by up to a third. In order to avoid capacity issues, local networks may have to be upgraded before new infrastructure is installed.

Moreover, the reliance on grid energy can be reduced by adopting smart charging during off-peak times, battery storage and even on-site generation, for example solar panels.

The magnitude of this increase in electricity consumption can often make it worthwhile to negotiate bulk tariffs and reciprocal energy supply agreements with suppliers. Maximising efficiency in energy usage and generation can create competitive advantage, often the biggest upside for electrification.

Fleet vehicles account for up to 55% of vehicle sales and leases in the UK. Given this large market share, it is crucial factor in the movement towards electric travel. Often, the rate of adoption of electric vehicles relies most heavily on fleet transformation.

In order to engage with the fleet management market, one must first understand the benchmarks that fleet managers use to make their decisions. The most important of these is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Rather than considering only the initial purchase price, fleet managers will also evaluate the running costs, repairs and future sell-on value of the vehicle. Transforming fleets is a challenging process and is unique to every entity. The term ‘fleet’ is in itself very broad, covering anything from golf carts to haulage lorries.

That said, most fleets are also heterogeneous in that they are not comprised solely of one type of vehicle. A single company can have multiple vehicular requirements and so the fleet will be made up of vehicles which each satisfy a specific purpose. Hereafter, we will discuss the challenges faced in the transformation of fleets to electric and offer solutions which can overcome these challenges.

When we think of the word ‘fleet’ we immediately are drawn to the classic Royal Mail red vans or our nation’s buses. However, the word applies to any commercial or public sector collection of vehicles.

In total, fleets currently make up around 56% of the vehicles of our roads. We are able to work across any industry to deliver transformation projects which are tailored to your business needs, whether it is a fleet of company cars or golf karts.

How can we help?

Fleet analysis - We do not use a specific, catch-all plan to apply to our clients. We use a data-driven approach to analyse the business needs and the nature of the organisation. We will be guided by your internal policies and the processes already in place in the business to ensure minimal upheaval.

We will also offer unique solutions which satisfy the needs of each employee based on their job profile, travel requirements and the locations in which they work.

🚗 Can You Buy a Second Hand EV? 🚗

The breadth of available EVs on the market continues to grow at a rapid pace, be it plug-in hybrid or fully electric.

With some models having been around for a few years now, we have started to see a rise in the number of second hand EVs available.

Electric cars have a reputation for being expensive, an aspirational item if you like. However, second-hand alternatives are now available for as little as £5,000.

There is a concerted push to produce more affordable electric cars, with companies like Tesla and Nissan striving to produce vehicles at an accessible price point. That said, the cheapest new electric car still costs around £17,000. If you are interested in switching to electric but your budget won’t stretch that far, a second-hand electric car offers a viable alternative. For example, we were able to find several second hand EVs in good condition for around £8,000 on AutoTrader.

There’s also no shortage of used electric cars to choose from, with thousands now available on the usual second-hand car sites. The choice available depends on the age of car you’re looking for. Around five years ago, there were only 15 mainstream EV models as we know them today but there are many more available that are nearly new.

We are often asked ' Do I need my car before I install a charge point?

The short answer is no - a charge point can be arranged and installed up to 4 months in advance of your car being delivered.

We always recommend that people discuss their charging needs at least 3 months in advance to avoid any delays. Carrying out surveys, applying for grants & stock lead times can all impact to the lead time of getting your charge point . This is not an instant process and many are unaware and surprised !

Our recommendation would be please plan ahead - there is nothing worse than a lovely new car in your driveway which you are unable to charge at home!

It has seemed for a while that Apple is slowly taking over our lives. From our phones never being more than a meter away from us, to the countless apple devices we own from iPads to MacBooks and now more products continue to come out such as AirPods and Apple TV. Living in 2020 without Apple is unimaginable and perhaps this is just the start for this American tech giant.

Going back to as early as 2014, apple began working on a project it named “Project Titan’ with almost one thousand employees working on this project. Later it was revealed that this project was Apple’s secret research and development of electric car technology.
