A visit to the Rural Life Living Museum at Tilford yesterday. A great museum for a wander round, lots to see.
In a shed near the Blacksmith’s shop, we found these three Auto Cultos, an L and two J mk1.

A rusty first…
Although we have used our model L on the allotment occasionally, this is the first time it’s been out in public.
The Auto Culto model L was built between 1948 and 1954. It uses the same chassis as the model M, but is fitted with the larger Villiers mk25A two stroke engine (250cc). This one was rescued from an allotment in Ringwood, Hampshire, and took very little to get it going again.
Pictured at today’s Twyford Waterworks open day.

Back from the steam fair, and back to the allotment, using the Auto Culto Junior to try and get the weeds under control. The ability to offset the handlebars is very useful for this sort of work.

A rarer model that has recently been rescued, an Auto Culto E, built between 1932 and the early part of 1939 (when it was superseded by the EX.

It still has the square section axle of the model A, but now boasts ratchet wheels. It is fitted with 250cc Villiers two-stroke engine, nominally rated t 2.5hp.

This machine is reasonably complete, missing the throttle control and becket, and the top part of the engine cowl. It has an incorrect fuel tank, bu we have a spare.

The engine is free, so, hopefully, it won’t take too much to get it going again!

Normally, we would have been at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this weekend, but due to the pandemic, it was cancelled last year and this.
As a reminder, here’s a picture from the horticultural working area in 2017, my daughter with our Auto Culto A, and me with our Auto Culto M.

Advert from the 1959 CGA (Country Gentlemens Association) price book.
Unfortunately not much Auto Culto detail, but it does give an idea of the range of horticultural machines available.
