Last week at our local auction there were many car Magasines from the 70s. This week the early 80s appeared and specifically a February 1985 copy. Nothing in the contents but a quick flick through and there it was!
SIR CLIVE SINCLAIR'S vaunted electric car is not the silent saloon we imagined. It's an assisted pedal car which takes one person, weighs 130lb, has a 15mph top speed and can be driven by 14year-olds without tax, a licence, insurance or crash helmets. It has a range of 24miles. The car, called Sinclair C5, is powered by a washing machine electric motor (pedal-assisted for hills) and costs around £400. It is the first of a range of electric vehicles that stretches up to the saloon-style cars we all thought were coming
sooner. This first car is a recumbent tricycle with a 'tub' made in polypropylene and a handlebar beneath the thighs for steering. There's an on-off switch for power and cycle-style levers to work the all-wheel brakes. Suspension is provided only by the tyres and compliance of the Lotus-designed chassis.
