RR2 Thistle

RR2 Thistle RR2 Thistle built in 1887 was due to be broken up, so a group of enthusiasts decided to save her. On RR2 Thistle was going to be broken up. Now the fun begins.

She had sadly been neglected and appeared to be beyond salvage, however a group of enthusiasts and friends decided to save her. She was towed up to Iron Wharf Boatyard on a night-time high tide, and nestled quietly in amongst the other historic barges, safe and ready for her new future. Her four owners have incredible skills and experience to get her seaworthy again, so with fund raising and perso

nal investment and time we can breath life back into Thi

She is the last of two remaining Rochester Bawleys and has had an incredible working and racing life. Our goal is to restore her and fish and race her again. Her minimal carbon footprint when fishing using traditional methods we hope will encourage others to join the eco-aquaculture farming. Thistle-do-it !

Now safe and sold. There is information on our National Historic Ships Register. Because she is so rare we registered her as this is site is a great resource.
This information there shows work which was done, her history and how she was when we rescued her. The Certificate can be switched to a new owner. The picture of her afloat is from when we rescued her, she was towed to the boatyard.
RR2 Thistle | National Historic Ships

During Lockdown work stopped so her hull has been exposed to the weather. The deck has been temporarily sealed and up until february she was under cover.

The engine is up and running, there are various blocks, spars (which need some tlc) fuel tank, various dials, rudder, sails, fastenings, mast.

Down below has been cleaned out and the engine bay has been preserved and primed ready for a final paint and then the engine fitting.

I've attached photos taken today so you can see the outside and there are lots of photos on facebook and Instagram of work as we've done it.

Yes the price is £1500 which to be fair is what new sails would cost so she is a bargain. But we feel she needs to be restored by someone who will respect her history and sail her again.

NOW SOLD. 1887 from Bawley Bay - Its with a heavy heart that we have decided to part with Thistle. She's come along way since we towed her into Faversham Creek in the early hours all those years ago, and we've achieved alot. Sadly previous owners have moved on for personal reasons, and I fractured my spine last year, its just been myself and Morgan trying our best to keep the project going.
She comes with sails, reconditioned running Kelvin engine (worth £600), some wood, blocks, mast, stainless steel fuel tank, rudder, spars and a whole lot more, and she is still very much a viable project.
Her page tells alot about her, and she has an instagram page as well, so you can see how things have progressed. There is a great deal of history evidence as well kindly passed on from her previous owners. That makes her a very honest purchase and everything is out there.
If there is someone out there who is genuinely keen to become custodian of this beautiful historic vessel then please email me on [email protected] (not through FB please).
