Learnwithjay.co.uk Teaching the safest way to drive, not just to pass your test, but for life

As a Fully Qualified Driving Instructor my job is to help you feel safe when learning to drive a manual car and to fully understand the important of driving safely. Whilst learning the basics of driving you will also be learning how to control the car safely and being responsible for not just you and your passengers but pedestrians and other road users too. All the skills you will learn will be made visible to the examiners on your driving test day.

Congratulations Jamie for passing your test today in your aunties car. Thanks for coming round to tell me the good news. I'm glad we were able to lose those bad habits you picked up and also getting you to do your mirrors. So much so that you passed with ZERO faults. Just remember TYRES AND TARMAC 😂. Stay safe.

What is a speed limiter

A speed limiter is an electronic device in a vehicle designed to prevent the car from exceeding a driver-selected or manufacturer-set speed.

Unlike cruise control, which maintains a constant speed, a speed limiter acts as a "ceiling." You can accelerate freely up to your chosen limit, but once you reach it, the engine management system restricts further power to keep the vehicle from going faster—even if you press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor.

How It Works

Setting the Speed: You typically set the speed via steering wheel buttons or a stalk.

Active Restriction: As you approach the set limit, you will feel resistance in the pedal. If you maintain the speed, the car will simply hold that pace.

The "Kick-down" Override: For safety reasons, if you need to accelerate quickly to avoid a hazard (such as overtaking or merging), you can usually override the limiter by pressing the accelerator pedal firmly past a mechanical "detent" or click-point at the bottom of its travel. This immediately restores full engine power.

Why Use One?

Traffic Compliance: In areas with strict speed enforcement or variable speed limits, it helps prevent accidental speeding.

Fuel Efficiency: Maintaining a steady, lower speed can help reduce fuel consumption on long motorway journeys.

Fatigue Reduction: It removes the need for constant monitoring of the speedometer, allowing you to focus more on the road ahead.

Important Distinction

Do not confuse a speed limiter with an Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) system. While a limiter is manually set by the driver, an ISA system uses cameras and GPS data to read road signs and automatically adjust the vehicle's speed limit setting based on the current legal limit of the road you are traveling on.
