Get as much practice in as you can. Short term/temp insurance might make this easier rather than paying for a whole year....lots of insurance companies do it...

Learner driver insurance or provisional insurance, lets you practice outside of lessons in a friend or family members car. Cover from 1 hour to 180 days.
