The freedom is amazing, and you're probably already looking at the car you've always dreamed of owning... but slow down for a minute.
Before you buy any car, check the insurance cost first!
Insurance premiums can vary massively between different makes and models. Even two versions of the same car with different engine sizes or trim levels can have surprisingly different insurance prices.
💡 Before you call an insurer, write down the registration numbers of 2–3 cars you're interested in and ask for a quote on each one. Spending 10 minutes doing this could save you hundreds—or even thousands—of pounds.
Also remember, premium cars come with premium repair bills. Parts, tyres, servicing and repairs all tend to cost more.
You've only just started your driving journey, so it might be worth choosing something that's cheaper to buy, insure and maintain. Build up your experience (and your no-claims bonus), then in a year or two you can upgrade to the car you've always wanted.
A sensible first car doesn't have to be your forever car—but it can save you a lot of money and stress.
