Another one in the workshop this week 🔧💀

A failed auxiliary belt snapped and got pulled into the timing cover, stripping the cambelt and causing major engine damage. Unfortunately, this meant a full engine rebuild was needed 😬

Regular checks can help prevent costly repairs like this. Don’t leave it too late!!

🚨 Wet Belt Failure – A Common but Serious Issue 🚨

This Peugeot PureTech engine came into us with a severely cracked and deteriorating wet timing belt — a problem we’re seeing more and more frequently across modern vehicles.

🔧 What is a wet belt?
Unlike traditional timing belts that run dry outside the engine, a wet belt runs inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. Manufacturers introduced this design to improve efficiency, reduce friction, and lower emissions.

However, over time the belt material can degrade in the oil, leading to:
• Cracking and delamination of the belt
• Blocked oil pick-up strainers from belt debris
• Loss of oil pressure
• Potential catastrophic engine failure

🚗 Which manufacturers use wet belts?
Wet belts are commonly found in engines from:
• Peugeot / Citroën (PureTech engines)
• Ford (EcoBoost engines)
• Vauxhall / Opel
• Volkswagen Group (some newer engines)

⚠️ The key takeaway:
These belts often fail before the manufacturer’s recommended interval, especially if oil changes are missed or incorrect oil is used.

At Curdridge Mot Centre, we strongly recommend:
✔️ Regular servicing with the correct specification oil
✔️ Inspecting the belt condition where possible
✔️ Replacing the wet belt proactively to avoid costly engine damage

If you’re unsure whether your vehicle has a wet belt or when it should be replaced, feel free to get in touch — we’re happy to advise.

⚡️ A truly SHOCKING day in the workshop today…

This shock absorber didn’t just fail — the spring cup has completely snapped off due to corrosion 😬
Safe to say this one was riding on borrowed time!

A good reminder to get those suspension components checked, especially on older vehicles where rust likes to hide.

Because when they go… they really go!

🔧 Stay safe, stay maintained — and avoid any more “shocking” surprises.
