Race report from the weekend at round 7 of the ESKC Loncin cadet championship
Skye & Thomas were together under driver coaching from Johnny - working on their racing lines etc.
Sat Testing was off to a slow start, with our randomly allocated engine being…. Well let’s say it would struggle to pull the skin off a rice pudding 🤣.
Load of engine work later - including cleaning out the carb and setting valve clearances saw us pull back some of its original power and manage to get in a couple of good test sessions in the afternoon - Skye making use of her coaching Skye push past her PB laptime on track layout B.
Sunday morning, the weather looking ominous but held out for qualifying…. Only just. We were a little slow but qualified 9th of 18 karts.
Race 1 - we were planning ahead looking at the weather closing in with the drizzly rain and swapped to wet tyres (one of only 3 karts that made this choice) - the dummy grid gate opened, everyone lined up on the grid and the Clark of the course made the call to advise everyone to switch to wets for safety. Once the green flag finally dropped, we were underway and a few laps later someone slammed into Skye spinning her out causing her to loose a few positions. Fighting her way back through the pack and over cooked it coming into the double apex locked the brakes and spun out. Finishing 10th.
Race 2: after a good start and fighting up to 6th place, near the end of the race she again locked up and spun on the double apex allowing 4 karts through before she could get back on track. Again finishing 10th.
Race 3: by this point the rain was battering down. A few more tweaks to setup gave her a little more balance and control. Fought on to finish 8th.
Unfortunately the weather never let up over the lunch break and the track flooded, leading to the race proceedings being abandoned on safety grounds - which as much as we love racing, believe was the right call TBH. The sad part, is the realisation that next months round 8 will unfortunately be Skye’s last in the cadets 😢 before moving up a class due to her age (although there are talks of a winter endurance race 😎)
A big thanks to all the Marshalls and officials that relentlessly put themselves out on track in these conditions to allow us to race. Without whom none of it would be possible.
Also like to say well done to all the competitors, particularly the kids and their commitment to keep racing on in these conditions, and making it over the line in one piece, You guys were awesome 🤩
