📢 The rules for booking a practical car driving test are changing.

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to change a driving test booking up to 2 times.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping an appointment with another learner

If you’re an ADI, please make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready as swapping between pupils will count towards this limit. You can set times when you're available to take your pupils to their driving tests. This stops your pupils from booking tests at times that do not work for you.

👉 When this comes into force, everyone with a driving test booked will have 2 changes available, regardless of how many changes they may have already made.

This change is part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked.

Thinking about learning to drive? Trying to find a Driving Instructor to take you on?

Whichever instructor or driver training company you choose to go with there are some essential things you need to have in place before you start:

1) a current and valid Provisional Driving Licence - without one you won’t be going anywhere!
2) a realistic training budget and ready funds for your training costs - driving and running a car is not cheap and if you’re going to learn and perfect the skillset needed to be a safe competent driver for life, your training will have to be invested in.
3) a realistic amount of time for lessons and/or private practice - half an hour of your lunch break every other Tuesday will not be sufficient!
4) ideally either have already passed your Theory Test or be well on the way towards it - make sure you have a sound theory knowledge of the Highway Code to ensure you can complete your practical training at the earliest opportunity - this will save you a lot of both time and money. If you haven’t bought an up-to-date Highway Code and Theory books or Theory apps - these are the essential first steps towards getting your full driving licence.

So often we hear and read that driving instructors/driving lessons are almost impossible to get and it’s true that both driver trainers and examiners are extremely busy often with waiting lists, but availability does come up from time to time with all of us. So make sure you give yourself the best headstart by ensuring you get the necessary elements in place before you start arranging your lessons.
