The importance of a proper conversation with the customer regarding their vehicles symptoms.

​We had a Corby black cab in with an intermittent cooling fault but zero fault codes. On the ramps in the workshop, a standard static run-up showed absolutely nothing wrong—the engine came up to temperature, the fan cycled, and live data looked completely normal.

​If we had stopped there, it would have been signed off as "no fault found."

​Gathering as much information from the customer helps us recreate the fault. Speed at time of fault, length of time vehicle was running, road types etc.

​So we took the vehicle on a prolonged, realistic road test to replicate those exact driving conditions, with live data logging hooked up.

The scanner caught what the human eye on an idling car never would—a momentary signal dropout where the Engine Coolant Temperature dropped straight out to -30°C before jumping back to normal.

​That split-second drop to -30°C points straight to an intermittent sensor or wiring/circuit fault that only triggers under specific road vibration and engine movement.

​This stops the Guesswork, pinpointing the actual electrical glitch instead of throwing random thermostats or water pumps at it.

Seized caliper slide pins have caused premature pad failure resulting in customer also needing new discs.

Oil in the Coolant: 1.6 Astra Head Gasket

​We stripped down this 1.6 Vauxhall Astra today after the head gasket failed, pushing oil straight into the cooling system.

​Once a head gasket fails this badly and contaminates the coolant, there's only one right way to fix it. We don't just slap a new gasket on and hope for the best.

​The cylinder head has been unbolted and sent away for full remanufacturing—pressure testing, skimming, and rebuilding to ensure a factory-flat mating surface before it goes back on the block.

Clutch replacement on a MINI.

The clutch fork snapping in half was caused by a seized pressure plate that put extra strain on the fork.

The vehicle was fitted with a new clutch, clutch fork and guide tube. As well as a new clutch master cylinder that also snapped due to the extra effort required to release the clutch.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

​We recently welcomed a VW Golf into the workshop for a routine Haldex coupling service. While the standard factory schedule simply calls for a fluid refresh, the customer specifically requested that we go a step further: removing the Haldex pump entirely to clean out its integrated gauze filter.

​The Technical Reality:
​Beyond the Schedule: Removing the pump and cleaning the gauze does not form part of the official Volkswagen service schedule.

​Why It's Worth Doing: Over time, the internal clutch packs naturally shed friction material, creating a thick sludge that accumulates directly on top of the pump's mesh filter. If left uncleaned, this debris restricts fluid flow, starves the pump of oil, and can ultimately lead to total failure of the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

​The Process: We carefully extracted the pump mechanism, thoroughly cleaned out the housing cavity, and completely stripped the metallic contaminants from the gauze screen before refilling the unit with fresh fluid.

Astra GTC clutch replacement.

​Major Stripping Required: To get clear access to the transmission on these Astra GTC models, the front subframe has to be completely unbolted and dropped from the vehicle.

​The Damage: Once the gearbox was separated, the old friction plate showed severe wear—completely worn down and fraying at the edges, which was causing major slipping and loss of drive.

​Flywheel Inspection: We also inspected the dual-mass flywheel and due to excessive blueing and play customer agreed to a replacement.

​The Fix:
​Brand New Assembly: We’ve installed a premium quality, factory-spec GM clutch kit, including a brand-new pressure plate and friction material to restore smooth, crisp gear changes and new flywheel.

​Full Reassembly: The subframe has been safely bolted back into place, torqued to spec, and the vehicle is undergoing validation checks.
