We were watching Anglia Car Auctions yesterday and results like this are a fascinating reference point for value and how the market is behaving right now.
This Range Rover goes beyond belief and, quite simply, I cannot really comment on the hows and whys. Yes, it has unbelievably low mileage, but it will still require a full recommissioning. And for what. Once it is used, it becomes just another example, worth broadly the same as any other with normal mileage.
It is a one owner car only until the V5 changes. After that, it is a two owner car like countless others.
It does make you question why we even have showrooms. Sales people, valeting, heating, lighting, electricity, insurance and risk all add up. Yes, auctions have overheads too, but they do not offer confidence, protection or continuity. Yet we continue to see cars and motorcycles making more money under the hammer than they do in a showroom.
Will auctions eliminate showrooms over time. Possibly at the very top end, where rarity and theatre outweigh logic.
But for most buyers, the reason a showroom still exists is trust. The ability to properly inspect a vehicle, ask questions, understand its history and buy with consumer protection. Paying more at auction is not really about value. It is about emotion, scarcity and the moment.
I understand this is a unicorn. But the question has to be asked. At what cost.
