Are the Government’s EV targets realistic? ⚡🚗

We asked what drivers really think about the push towards electric vehicles and there was certainly no agreement.

Some believe the growing choice of EVs could help the UK hit its targets, while others think the lack of charging infrastructure could hold things back.

So, should the targets stay as they are, or should they be lowered?

What do you think? 👇

🚘Gen Z, is it truly a choice between car ownership and those well-deserved holidays or daily iced lattes? A recent debate suggests younger drivers might be prioritising experiences over getting on the road.

With rising living costs, buying and running a car can feel like a huge commitment, especially when insurance, petrol, and car tax add up. For many, a car is essential for work or family, but others see it as a luxury they can postpone for now.

Is it fair to say younger generations are opting for immediate gratification over a significant investment like a car? Or is it simply a sign of changing priorities and tougher economic realities?

💭Cost of car ownership is soaring
💭Public transport options are improving in some areas
💭The desire for travel and experiences is strong
💭Flexibility and less commitment appeal to many

Imagine needing a car for work, but seeing your mates jetting off or enjoying daily treats. It's a tough balance to strike!

Whether you need your car every day or prefer to spend on experiences, it's a personal choice influenced by many factors.

⚠️Big shake-up for driving licences? The AA is calling for a major change that could let automatic licence holders drive manual cars without a full second test! This comes as 4 out of 5 new cars registered last year were automatics.

Instead of another practical test, the idea is for a short conversion course and assessment. Germany already has a similar system, where learners take ten 45-minute lessons plus an assessment to qualify. The AA believes a UK version should be even more thorough.

It's a hot topic for UK drivers. Some argue the current system is outdated, while others worry about road safety if drivers aren't fully tested on manual skills.

🚘Modernising archaic driving laws
🚘Making it easier to switch between car types
🚘Potential impact on road safety
🚘Flexibility for a changing car market

Imagine finding your dream car, but it's a manual and you only have an auto licence – this could open up your options. But is it worth the potential trade-offs?

It's a balancing act between convenience and ensuring everyone on our roads is fully competent in all vehicle types.

🚨Volvo's new EVs are getting a tech upgrade that uses AI to spot hazards like animals and other cars, giving drivers early warnings. This could make our roads safer, especially in rural areas or during bad weather!

The system uses advanced sensors and AI to detect dangers that might be missed by the human eye, aiming to reduce accidents. It's a step towards more proactive safety features in electric cars.

⚠️Early Warning System: AI detects potential hazards.
⚠️Improved Safety: Aims to reduce collisions with animals and other vehicles.
⚠️Rural Roads: Especially beneficial where hazards are less predictable.
⚠️All-Weather Capability: Designed to work in various conditions.

Imagine driving on a dark country lane and your car alerts you to a deer hidden in the hedge before you even see it.

While more tech can mean safer roads, some drivers might worry about over-reliance or system glitches.

🚘Big news from Volkswagen! They're planning up to 100,000 job cuts worldwide by 2030 as part of a huge efficiency drive. This aims to slash costs and boost competitiveness against rivals like Tesla.

This isn't just about job losses; it's a clear signal of the massive shift happening in the car industry. VW needs to make €10 billion in savings to stay competitive, especially with the push towards electric vehicles and digital services. It could affect production, R&D, and even how cars are designed.

Cost cutting: Aiming for €10 billion in savings.
Future focus: Shifting heavily towards EVs and software.
Global impact: Cuts planned across the workforce by 2030.

Fewer jobs at big manufacturers might mean fewer choices or different types of cars down the line. It's a tough trade-off for staying in the race.

🚘Self-driving taxis are officially on London's streets! Wayve and Uber have launched the capital's first robotaxis, meaning you could soon hail one via your Uber app. For now, though, there are only 15 cars available, and a human safety driver will still be behind the wheel, ready to take over.

This isn't fully driverless yet – regulatory approval for cars without a safety driver is still pending. Uber believes these could eventually be "safer and cheaper", but union reps are worried about job losses and "unprecedented levels of social and economic disruption" for the hundreds of thousands of drivers currently employed. It's a huge step forward for AI tech, but also a big question mark for the future of traditional taxi and private hire jobs.

🚕Only 15 Wayve robotaxis are initially licensed in London.
🚕A human safety driver is legally required to be in every vehicle.
🚕Uber says the long-term goal is "safer and cheaper" rides.
🚕Union GMB warns of potential "social and economic disruption".

Imagine hailing a robotaxi for your next journey – exciting or a bit unsettling?

💰Drivers, this is infuriating! Croydon Council has only refunded a tiny 4% of the over £13 million collected from unlawful Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) fines. That's over £12 million still sitting with the council.

Six months after the High Court ruled their LTNs illegal, partly because they were seen as a revenue generator, thousands of motorists are still waiting for their money back. Some even faced debt collectors for fines from these unlawful schemes.

This isn't just about Croydon; it sets a worrying precedent for drivers across the UK. Councils imposing schemes later ruled unlawful yet holding onto the cash?

💸Just 4% of £13 million refunded
💸High Court ruled LTNs unlawful partly due to revenue generation
💸Thousands of drivers fined, some pursued by debt collectors
💸Council admitted using anticipated fine income in budgets

Imagine being fined for something later deemed illegal, and then struggling to get your money back. It makes you wonder how councils view drivers.

🚨Birmingham drivers, prepare for change! New 20mph speed limits are rolling out across the city, sparking a huge debate about whether they're a safety win or just another anti-motorist move. The council argues it's about road safety and cleaner air, but many drivers are feeling the pinch on journey times.

This isn't just a few streets; over 90% of Birmingham's residential roads are affected by these new restrictions. That means many everyday routes you know could now be much slower, potentially adding minutes to your commute or school run.

🚘Slower journeys? You might find your usual drives taking longer.
🚘Frustration builds? Drivers are already voicing concerns about increased congestion and delays.
🚘Enforcement worries? Questions remain about how these new limits will be policed.

Imagine rushing to an appointment and having your average speed drastically cut on familiar roads. It could feel like a real drag. These changes are set to impact thousands of motorists daily.

🚗 Parking is about to get a whole lot easier… 👀

Imagine pulling into a tight parking space without worrying about awkward three-point turns, scraped alloys or trying to squeeze into a tiny spot.

Some of the latest cars are bringing self-parking technology and even the ability to turn on the spot — making manoeuvring in tight spaces easier than ever.

From advanced steering systems to clever parking tech, these features could completely change the way we park. 🤯

But would you actually trust your car to park itself? 👇

🚘Half of UK drivers are now open to buying a Chinese car! This marks a huge shift in the motoring landscape. For decades, European and Japanese brands dominated, but new players are rapidly gaining ground.

New data shows that 50% of motorists would consider a Chinese-made vehicle. With competitive pricing and impressive tech, these brands are challenging traditional favourites.

✅Value for money
✅Advanced technology
✅Modern designs
✅Longer warranties

It's a sign that UK drivers are prioritising features and price over established badges. Could this mean big changes for the second-hand market too?
