I am so proud to see you get your license today. You managed your nerves and any self doubt and produced an outstanding drive. 🌠How long will it take me to learn to drive?🌠

After 12 months of taking pupils to driving tests, I finally have been able to go through the data to see what the average time is from starting lessons with me to passing your test.

Now every learner is totally different. Confidence, previous road experience, opportunities for private practice, and how quickly you develop your skills all play a part.

Looking back at my own pupils from the last 12 months, some have been ready to pass in around 4 months, while others have taken closer to 10 months. The majority of pupils I've taught from the beginning have reached test standard in around 6–9 months.

Some pupils take a little longer due to having no private practice or taking longer to pass their theory, but in general around 30 hours of tuition is the average for my pupils would be the fairest statistic for me to quote. (This is why I like all my pupils to have their theory passed ASAP)

🌠How much will it cost?🌠

Again, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

Based on my own figures, pupils who took around 6–9 months to pass invested an average of around £1,550 in lessons.

🌠Should I just give the driving test a go?🌠

This is where the data surprised me.

Comparing two pupils with very similar learning journeys, one passed first time after investing around £1,550 in lessons. Another eventually passed on their third attempt, investing around £1,920 in lessons.

That's around £370 more in lesson fees alone, before adding the cost of two extra driving tests and any other associated expenses.

Now, that's not to say failing your test is a bad thing. Many brilliant, safe drivers don't pass first time, and there's absolutely no shame in that.

What it does show is that rushing to test before you're genuinely ready doesn't always save time or money.

Celebrating 1 year of ripping up L Plates!!

On this day last year, I took my very first pupil to their driving test. Looking back now, it's amazing to see how much knowledge I've gained in that time. Over the last year, I've supported 16 people to get their driving licence, with 11 of those passing on their first attempt.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their driving journey, recommended me to friends and family, shared my posts, or left a review. Your support has helped my little business grow, and I genuinely appreciate every single one of you.

Here's to another year of helping more learners achieve that life-changing pass!

🎉🎉Well done Felix 👏

I've only had a few lessons with Felix, as his dad Henry Hodgkinson contacted me last week to see if I could take him out for a few lessons before his test today.

Felix took his test in his own car with examiner Craig, and I sat in the back. I always try to sit in as many tests as possible because it helps me give better feedback to learners, whatever the result. It also gives me a good insight into how they drive under pressure.

During the test, Felix completed a fantastic reverse bay park and emergency stop, and also had to deal with some extremely heavy traffic. He took it all in his stride, and I was delighted to hear Craig congratulate him at the end.

This pass is thoroughly deserved. From our very first lesson, I've always felt safe and confident in your driving ability. Today you kept your nerves under control, trusted yourself, and delivered a brilliant drive.

Failed your driving test?

You'll be familar with the common phrases "Unfortunately you haven't been successful" "I'm sorry you haven't been successful" etc. I've never experienced an examiner use the word fail.

However what next? Should you book another test ASAP?

The examiner's report isn't there to tell you that you've failed. It's there to tell you what to work on next.

As an instructor, one of the first things I do is look for patterns, not just faults.

Was it one isolated mistake?

Do the same faults keep appearing?

Did nerves make small mistakes snowball?

Some pupils pass first time. Others need two, three or even more attempts. What matters isn't how many tests it takes, it's that you become a safe, confident driver for life.

It's not great that test waits are as long as they are, but hopefully that will improve. However it's not always best to rush and book another test just because one is available. Take time to understand your report, work on the areas that matter, rebuild your confidence and then go again.

A failed test isn't the end of the journey. For most people, it's just another lesson (albeit a stressful, expensive one 😫)

You've only truly failed if you stop trying.

1st Time Pass!

Congratulations to Lewis Moreton Evans from Connah's Quay on passing his driving test first time in Chester today!

A brilliant result and thoroughly deserved. Lewis has worked hard throughout his lessons, taken on feedback, and kept improving every week. It was great to see all that effort pay off today.

Lewis has also provided me with a somewhat musical education in lessons, but unfortunately we couldn't get the Queens Of The Stone Age uploaded in time for test so had to go with The Wallows. Having some music playing in the background definitely helps many pupils ease nerves before and during the test.

Looking to start driving lessons but not 17 yet?

When you reach 16 and 9 months, that's when you can book a theory but it has to be on or after your 17th birthday.

My advice. Get your theory test at least booked or even passed before you start paying for driving lessons. .

I won't take on pupils without a theory test booked or passed because in my opinion learners are more focused, engaged and lots safer if they are motivated to get their theory done.

It is also likely to cost less to learn to drive in the long term in most cases. Don't put it off, book your theory today.

Congratulations Fiona Jones!

Passed on her 1st attempt in 🌞 Rhyl today. 1 minor for a parking adjustment that the examiner said she hadn't needed to do. Stunning drive. An absolute natural driver, who had already started her journey with my lovely instructor friend Drive with Sian - Driving Tuition, but unfortunately had to pause lessons due a small matter of having a 2nd child. Kudos to Sian as you were already very good by the time you started lessons with me.

Sitting in the back of the car whilst Fiona completed such a spectacular drive was such a proud moment. Excellent feedback from examiner Lee, who really put Fiona at ease during the test, making conversation when he could see she felt nervous.

Fiona didn't fancy posing for one of my pass photos, which is completely fine with me. So I am recreating a pass picture (social media marketing!)

Fiona said if she has one piece of advice for my pupils who are yet to do their test it would be to stay chill and not rush.

What happens now if you fail your driving test?

A few months ago, if someone failed, it was upsetting, but often they could get back onto the booking apps, find a cancellation, and retake within a few weeks.

Now, for many learners, that is becoming much harder.

The DVSA has changed the booking rules to try and stop bots, resellers and unfair booking practices. I completely understand why something needed to change. But right now, the impact on genuine learners feels huge.

Sometimes a test just does not go your way. It does not always mean someone needs another six months of lessons. Many learners are test-ready, but nerves, pressure, one mistake, or one unlucky moment can change the result.

And now the pressure to pass first time feels even bigger.
Learners have already spent so much money getting to test standard. If they fail, they may not need loads more lessons, they may just need to keep their skills fresh. But with long waits, that becomes expensive, stressful and really unfair.

I genuinely hope the DVSA changes start to help over the next few months, because learners are under immense pressure at the moment.

The system needed fixing, but right now, a lot of genuine learners are feeling punished.
