A motorist has been banned from driving after he was caught driving at 62mph with both hands behind his head.

Richard Newton, 36, from Whitby, was filmed driving for about 30 seconds with both hands off the steering wheel, Scarborough Magistrates' Court heard.

He was caught by a police safety camera van on the A171 between Whitby and Guisborough on 9 August.

Mr Newton had argued he was in control of the car but was found guilty of dangerous driving.

He was given a 12-month ban and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

He was also fined £625 and told he must pay a £60 victim surcharge.

Dave Brown, from North Yorkshire Police said: "This case demonstrates two things. One is the sheer stupidity of some people who put others in danger and the other is the ability of our safety camera to capture a range of offences."

Worth a read. On her first driving lesson with her husband, this lady lost control of the vehicle and killed a young girl. Surely it is about time it was made compulsory for all new drivers to have a minimum amount of Professional Tuition prior to going out on the road.

We are all quick to knock down Examiners when things go wrong, but today I have nothing but amiration for one Examiner at W Didsbury TC. On returning from test told pupil' Pleased to say you've PASSED with 7 driver faults. However I have had candidates pass with 3, 2 or even 1 fault not drive as well as you did today. You gave an extremely creditable, intelligent, thoughtful and considerate drive." He took particular pride in a meeting situation where he explained that with a bus approaching on a narrow road with cars parked down both sides, my candidate decided the safest option was to continue ahead otherwise the bus may have had to stop and force her to reverse. He even told her that he expected her to stop as all candidates would have done so in that situation. He went on to explain that at one point he was sorely tempted to fail her during a meeting situation, but considering how well she drove, felt she really was a safe driver and only the fact that she was being assessed affected her judgement. A big THANK YOU to an extremely human Examiner that showed he understands the pressures of the test and well done to Anna.
