Before opening CAD, it is important to ask some key questions.

What does the product actually need to do?
Who is going to use it?
What constraints are we working within?
What does success look like?

Clarifying these things early on can save a lot of redesign work later on.

Addenbrooke's Hospital is 260 years old.

It’s quite a milestone, isn’t it? From its establishment as a small hospital in 1766, Addenbrooke’s has grown to become a major teaching and specialist hospital, playing a key role in the development of healthcare in Cambridge for generations.

I find it particularly interesting how much healthcare has changed during that time. The equipment, technology and environments that clinicians work with today would have been unthinkable when the hospital first opened.

This makes the engineering behind modern medical devices particularly interesting to us.
This month, we’re looking back at the development of a day surgery table designed around the needs of both patients and clinicians.

The project involved balancing patient comfort, clinician accessibility and the practicalities of clinical use, alongside the engineering and manufacturing requirements needed to turn the concept into a viable product.

When we think about maritime engineering, we tend to think of ships and engines and everything that keeps them moving.

However, a huge amount of engineering also takes place in areas that most of us will never see. Underwater equipment has to cope with pressure, corrosion, temperature, accessibility and reliability in ways that most products simply don't.

This is one of the things I find interesting about engineering. The fundamental question remains: how can we ensure reliable performance?

The answer becomes much more complicated when the product needs to work several kilometres beneath the surface.

Today is World Maritime Day, so it's a good opportunity to recognise the engineering that keeps the maritime industry moving.

The idea of a foldable iPhone sounds like an exciting product design challenge.

But one thing we find interesting about products like this is that every design decision creates another problem elsewhere.

Make it thinner, for example and something has to move.

That's product development in a nutshell. There is rarely a perfect solution. Usually, there are a series of trade-offs that need to be understood and managed.

We've worked on quite a range of products over the years.

Medical devices, scientific equipment, industrial products, consumer products and some projects that are rather more difficult to categorise.

The industries are different, but the engineering problems often have more in common than you'd expect.

- How do we make it work reliably?
- How do we manufacture it consistently?
- How do we reduce unnecessary cost and complexity?
- What happens when the product is actually being used in the real world?

That's the part of product development we enjoy.

We've put together some of our recent and previous work on the website if you'd like to see what we've been involved with 👇

A prototype can reveal much more than just whether the product looks right.

It can also tell you if the mechanism works. It can tell you whether the components fit together properly. It can also tell you whether the proportions make sense. It can also reveal whether something that looked fine in CAD actually feels right when you hold it.

Perhaps most importantly, it can reveal issues while they're still relatively inexpensive to address. That's why I don't think of a prototype as just an early version of the final product. It's a way of learning.

The best prototypes answer questions. Sometimes they confirm that you're heading in the right direction.

Other times, they show you that something needs to change.

The development of a new product can quickly give rise to more engineering questions than a team has the time or specialist knowledge to answer internally.

That's where Cambridge Design Technology can help.

We collaborate with R&D teams, product managers, and engineering businesses in the medical, scientific, industrial, and technology sectors to transform initial concepts into products ready for manufacture.

This could involve supporting a prototype through to production readiness, solving difficult engineering constraints, reducing development risk, or simply providing additional engineering capacity when needed.

We're not there to take over your project. We're there to work alongside your team and help get things moving.

Welcome to a new recurring series from CDT: Engineering Tips.

We'll be sharing some of the smaller details that we think are worth considering during the development of a product. Nothing complicated. Just some practical engineering observations that could help you avoid problems later on.

Our first tip is to not leave manufacturing conversations until the end of the design process.
This may sound obvious, but involving manufacturing early on can have a significant impact on tooling, materials, assembly, costs, and production timelines.

Even if a product is technically possible, it can still be unnecessarily difficult or expensive to manufacture, and it's much easier to address these issues while you're still designing the product.
