With things kicking off next weekend at Gurston Down with the pre-season test we had a visit from our favourite girl in orange Becky Crocombe and sim regular Stuart Lugger who were keen to do some Hillclimb practice on the JW-RS simulator before next weekend.

Joining them for the day was Archie Cooper who is becoming a bit of a regular face around Field Farm as well as a fleeting visit from Laurence Marks who is busy preparing his new Formula Ford for this seasons Hillclimb events.

The group mainly spent the day practicing Gurston and Prescott in the Formula Ford but also did some runs up the latest test version Doune in the JW-RS 1100 which proved to be very entertaining.

Letโ€™s hope next weekend stays dry for the test โ€ฆ.

Cheers

Happy Easter to all our Hillclimb Friends.

Itโ€™s been a while since our last update on this project so hereโ€™s a preview of the work in progress being made by Thomas Schmid of Toms-Sim-Side on bringing Doune to life in Assetto Corsa.

As you can all see from the video below, Tom has made amazing progress since our last preview video back in early January with the modelling of the track and track side trees, objects, spectators โ€ฆ etc now almost complete.

However โ€ฆ Doune has just been treated to some new Tarmac and Tom is keen to incorporate those changes into his model so if there is anyone out there with info on the where the new Tarmac has been laid and/or have any photoโ€™s of the new tarmac please get in touch with either myself or Tom.

I can't stress how much fun this track is on the JW-RS simulator, it's so fast and narrow with no room for mistakes ... its a real challenge and has become my personal favourite hillclimb track on the sim.

Cheers All
Jay

Josh Buchanan along with his dad Jamie teamed up with Tim Cowlam, Francis Sykes and making his first visit to the JW-RS simulator Zach Misselbrook for the second VWHC session of 2026.

All the drivers were keen to put in practice and timed runs at all four tracks of the VWHC (Gurston, Shelsely, Prescott and Loton) so we had our work cut out to fit all of that into the afternoon session.

Young Josh pilled on the pressure straight out of the gate putting in some very fast times at all four events while Tim and Francis worked hard on their lines and improved their current VWHC times by a good step with Tim putting in a run at Shelsley that got him ahead of Josh by 98, 1000's.

We were very impressed with Zach Misselbrookโ€™s driving skills, for someone who has never used a sim before or done any hill climbing he took to it like a duck to water and kept Josh honest by putting in some very fast times (just 75, 1000โ€™s off Josh at Loton).

As always this was a great group of drivers to work with and everyone went home with a smile on their face. The leaderboards have been updated with this sessions results over on our website.

We are now half way through the 2025/26 VWHC which will run through till the end of March, if you want to take part, please get in touch with either myself or Becky Crocombe and get some sessions booked before time runs out.

Cheers

JW-RS wish all our friends and the Hillclimb community a very happy new year.

As a little new year treat for you all, I present our first video of the work in progress being made by the incredibly talented Thomas Schmid of Toms-Sim-Side on Doune.

The project is still at a very early stage with all the work being mainly concentrated on getting the basic track layout correct. To date most of this has been done using only on-board videos as a reference and I think you will all agree that Tom has done an amazing job so far with the limited resources and data on hand.

The track is already a blast to drive on the sim and itโ€™s only going to get better and better as the project moves forwards.

However we need the communityโ€™s help to make sure this project is finished to the high standard that Tom has set with his work on previous UK tracks such as Gurston, Loton, Prescott โ€ฆ etc, this includes but not limited to :-

1. Someone to walk the hill taking lots of photos of the track, tree line, marshal posts, trackside furniture, curbs ... etc

2. Photos of the lower and upper paddock aeraโ€™s and all buildings.

3. We need to know the track width at as many points as possible.

4. We could really do with some live data logs from real runs up the hill as we can use the GPS data to confirm the elevation and curvature of the bends.

If you can help with any of the above (or know someone you think could help) please get in touch with me via the contact form on our website :-

https://hillclimbsimulator.co.uk/index.php/contact

Alternatively you can get in intouch with Becky Crocombe or leave a comment below.

With the communityโ€™s help I know we can help Tom to make the dream of bringing an accurate version of Doune to Assetto Corsa a reality and if all goes well Doune could be ready as an event for next yearโ€™s VWHC which would be awesome.

Cheers
Jay

Note: In the the video, the cars front left tyre does momently dip into the barrier 1 or 2 times, I didn't notice this at the time of recording the run as currently a lot of the barriers have no collision masks applied to them (WIP).

Yesterday we had a visit from a special guest driver who was keen to get some last minuet practice in before the seasons last endurance race next week.

You can watch his fastest run in the video below and be sure to turn on the sound as the video is accompanied by a song titled "Race the Hill Tops" which I created just for the occasion with the help of some fancy SI software (Stupid Intellegence).

Wishing all our friends and everyone in the Hillclimb Community a very Merry Christmas.

It was great to welcome Tim Cowlam and Francis Sykes back to the JW-RS simulator for their first 2025/26 VWHC session. Driving the new JW-RS Formula Ford at Prescott, they were soon recording very respectable practice times and, once they felt they were ready, both drivers achieved mid-48s in their official timed runs to set the pace on the championship leaderboard.

Next up was Gurston Down, new for this yearโ€™s VWHC. Once again, Tim and Francis impressed with how quickly they got to grips with both the track and the car, culminating with Francis in the mid 37โ€™s and Tim with a very impressive 36.869s in the timed runs. As ever, itโ€™s rewarding to see drivers practise their lines, hone their technique, and build the confidence on the sim to help improve their performance on track. Hopefully even more PBs next year!

During the week we had a visit from Clive Mann who is looking to contest his Westfield at a few hillclimb events next season, Clive is relatively new to Hillclimbing and has never used a simulator before.

It did not take long for Clive to get used to driving the simulator using our new Caterham 420r model and he was soon putting in some decent times and starting to refine his lines. Cliveโ€™s a great bloke and will fit right into the hillclimb community, keep an eye open for him and his green Westfield in the paddock next year and say hello to him.

On Saturday we had a group visit from Luke Trotman, his son Austin and four of Lukes friends (Simon, Michael, Simon and David) since they were all sim novices we started them off at Curborough for some sim familiarisation before moving on to Prescott and Loton Park. This was a great group of competitive drivers who all took the sim very quickly and were keen to start a virtual run off between themselves.

Unfortunately I forgot to take any pictures of Lukes group on Saturday but hereโ€™s a picture of Clive Mann with his Westfield.

Throughout this yearโ€™s hillclimb season, the Gurston organisers held a draw at each race meeting for the Gurston marshals. All the names were placed in a hat and one of the drivers from that weekend picked a name out to win one of six places at a special marshals day at the JW-RS simulator.

The lucky winners were; Grahame Chubb, Jamie Buchanan, Martin Tucker, Paul West, Phil Cobley and Neal Callaghan.

Saturday 25th October was the day that was booked for the event to place and we were thrilled that all the winners were able to attend as well as Chief Marshal David Patrick and everyones favourite girl in orange Becky Crocombe who both organised the draw and event from their end.

Some of the marshals brought partners/friends/siblings along with them so this was by far the largest group session we have ever hosted so it was good thing we had put up our awning.

With the exception of Jamie Buchanan none of the other marshals had ever visited us before so we started the day with some basic driver training and sim familiarisation at Curborough sprint course in the new JW-RS RF94 Van Diemon Formula Ford.

Once everyone was upto speed it was time to move on to the main event of the day and let everyone loose on the Gurston Hillclimb track (Powered by Toms-Sim-Side). We've always been impressed with the ability of marshals to quickly get to grips with driving the sim in the past and this group was no exception, it was super impresive to watch them get faster and smoother as the day went on.

We finished the day with some semi-official timed runs, each driver got another four practice runs and then four timed runs with the fasted used to place them in a leaderboard :-

1st - Jamie Buchanan - 37.428
2nd - Neal Callaghan - 38.578
3rd - Martin Tucker - 39.148
4th - Paul West - 39.165
5th - David Patrick - 39.210
6th - Phil Cobley - 39.365
7th - Grahame Chubb - 43.743

We suspect that young Josh Buchanan has been coaching his dad in preparation for this year's VWHC as he put in some very fast and consistent times. With Jamieโ€™s times aside, we think everyone else did an excellent job considering they were all sim novices.

The day was a great success despite the weather turning a bit chilly and everyone left with a smile on their face. Special shoutout to the following :-

Laurence Marks for allowing us to borrow his Van Diemen Formula Ford for the day and ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป for his piloting skills while moving the car around the yard.

Becky Crocombe (as always) for supplying Jaffa cakes, snacks and making sure everything ran like clockwork on the day.

Greg Swan for helping me run the session.

I figured out how to adjust the on-board camera so you can now see much more of the drivers arms and steering input. I also figured out how to add/move/use additional virtual cameras positioned in different places around the car including one thats looking rear wards to capture exhaust flames on the down shift over run and another looking at the driver from the nose of the car.

This video is the exact same run/replay that was used in the last video but using my new V2 virtual cameras. In total there are eight separate replay files used in this edit all seamlessly cut together in Final Cut Pro 11 using the time clock as a reference.

I'm very pleased with the final result as it makes for a much more interesting and dynamic video. Iโ€™ll put these new virtual cameras and the improvements in the editing process to good use over the winter to capture the very best runs in the VWHC.

We all know FB video sucks so I also uploaded a high bitrate
1080P 60 FPS version of the video to YouTube :-

Following on from the last three videos it only seemed right to do one with the new JW-RS RF94 at Loton Park. For this video i tried something a bit different and generated three separate replay files using two external TV cameraโ€™s and one on-board camera.

In order for this to work i had to write my own custom python code to generate and render the time clock within Assetto Corsa rather than rendering the clock during the video editing process (like i have in the last few videos). With the time clock embedded within each replay file it effectively becomes a time stamp and thus makes it relatively easy to sync each replay file in the editing process to make seamless cuts.

I think the end result produces a much more interesting and dynamic video, the only issue now is that the RF94 model currently only has one on-board camera mounted above the driver with a narrow filed of view .... I think we can do better.

Next week Iโ€™ll see if i can figure out how to adjust the current on-board camera and try to add some additional ones for even more interesting and dynamic videos.

Cheers
Jay
