It has now been just over one year since I launched Lakeland Legacy.

I can honestly say that this project has been one of the best things I’ve ever done. I have learned so much and I have got enormous satisfaction from helping people.

There have been moments which will stay with me for the rest of my life. I can’t describe how it feels to be sat on a still lake at the crack of dawn, surrounded by mountains and nature, playing a piece of music that meant the world to someone as you lay them to rest.

I have spent some time this month thinking about everything I have learned and I am now focused on the future of this service. I have just revamped the website, clarifying my message and the service that I offer.

I have adjusted my pricing to better reflect the amount of work that I put into each service that I provide. If you were on the verge of booking, I will honour the old price until 1 December 2025.

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement. Every single like, share, comment, and kind word means so much to me.

Looking forward to seeing what 2026 brings.

Best wishes,

Martin

Hi all, if any of you are nearby any of these locations and you have a suitable dog, please consider helping out or alternatively share this with your friends. Thank you.

Upcoming sessions we urgently need more lifesavers to attend 🙏❗

Blood stocks are critically low, can your dog help at any of these upcoming sessions?

📍 Wimslow, Woodcroft Vets - Thursday 13 November
📍 Workington, Millcroft Vet Group - Saturday 15 November
📍 Penrith, Frame and Swift - Saturday 15 November
📍 Upminster, Wylie Vet Centre - Sunday 16 November
📍 Lincoln, The Veterinary Hospital - Tuesday 18 November
📍 Ashbourne, McMurtry and Harding Vets - Thursday 20 November
📍 Upper Caldecote, Elizabeth Smith Vets - Saturday 22 November
📍 Stourbridge, Vets4Pets - Sunday 23 November
📍 Cardiff, Valley Veterinary Hospital - Sunday 23 November

We have 57 appointments available across all of these sessions. That's up to 228 more lives we could help to save if we filled every slot 🩸

Please help us if you can by attending one of these sessions, sharing this post, or spreading the word to anyone you know who might be able to help.

The countdown to Christmas is on, and we need to ensure we have enough blood in stock for any dog that might need it - it truly is the greatest gift you could give a family.

To become a lifesaver, dogs need to be between 1 and 8, weigh over 25kg, and be fit, healthy, and confident 🐕

As always, your support is so appreciated ❤️

Is it acceptable to scatter a loved one's ashes in the countryside? https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0r0e7xkvlgo

This article describes inconsiderate ash scattering on popular summits in Scotland. I am aware of the same issue here in the Lake District. The last thing any bereaved family would want is to cause inconvenience or distress to other users of the countryside. I know we can all appreciate that at a time when you’re mourning, you might not see things objectively and it’s not hard to imagine this happening.

That’s why I always encourage people to be imaginative and open-minded when choosing a scattering location. The most meaningful places are often the quiet ones — not the famous viewpoints, but the hidden corners, the wilder stretches, the spots where you can truly be alone with your thoughts.

Helping families find those places is one of the best parts of what I do. 💚

Some hillwalkers are concerned they are coming across piles of ashes during treks in wild areas of Scotland.

A century of stories.

Later this month my grandmother turns 100. Around sixty of us — children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren — will gather to celebrate a life that has quietly spanned an entire century.

She asked me recently for a framed photograph of her own father, who died in the 1970s. There aren’t many pictures of him, and only one in colour — sun-bleached but full of warmth. With a bit of care and modern magic, I was able to bring it back to life and have it framed for her birthday.

There’s something quietly moving about restoring an image like that. It’s a small act of continuity — one generation reaching back to another, the past meeting the present in a moment of care.

I hope she likes it. ❤️

No pot of gold needed! Windermere is the real treasure at the end of the rainbow. 🌈💛

Every family I’ve helped has chosen a piece of music — always different, always perfect.
Out there on the water, it feels like they’re here again for one last chorus.

🎵 The Music That Plays

I’ve been providing my Lakeland Legacy service for nearly a year now.

Of everything I’ve experienced, the thing that’s stayed with me most is the music — the pieces families choose to accompany their loved one’s return to nature.

Every family has chosen something different, and every piece has been perfect.

I’m a great lover of music myself. Out on the water, when the music plays, I often feel that the person is somehow there with me — their personality in the rhythm, their energy in the sound.

Sometimes it’s defiant and anarchic.
Sometimes it’s whimsical and gentle.
Always, it’s them.

I have a deep respect for what families ask me to do.
There are no second chances.
The ashes become part of that place forever — fused with the water and the landscape.

Their story — every moment, every connection, everything they ever were — comes to rest there.
And the fact that it happens to a piece of music they loved makes it all the more profound.

Before each ceremony I listen to the chosen song several times, to understand it, to let it settle.
When the moment comes, it’s always the same mix of nerves, focus, and privilege.
I want to do right by them — by their story.

It’s an honour every time.

🎶 What music would you choose?
It’s a good question to think about — and maybe one to share with your loved ones.

🌊 Lakeland Legacy – helping families say goodbye, quietly, by hand, and with care.

A few kind words that meant a lot to me. A family recently shared these words after a ceremony I helped them with.
It reminded me why quiet, personal farewells matter so much.

I’m grateful to do this work — helping people find peace, and the right place to say goodbye.

🌊 Coniston Joins the Journey

It’s been a busy and encouraging few weeks at Lakeland Legacy. I’m delighted to share that, with the support of local trustees, I now have permission to offer ash scatterings on Coniston Water.

Coniston is one of the most iconic and loved lakes in the Lake District. To be able to help families say their goodbyes here — in a way that is quiet, personal, and respectful — feels very special indeed.

At the same time, I’ve also been developing a small consultancy service. Not everyone’s farewell is destined for the water, and I’ve found it incredibly rewarding to use my background in research, geography, and negotiation to help families find meaningful land-based locations too.

Over recent weeks, I’ve been privileged to carry out a ceremony by a river, capturing the moment with multiple cameras and carefully edited video so the family could keep a beautiful record. It opened my eyes to how varied and personal each request can be — and how important it is to tailor everything to the family’s wishes.

As always, thank you for your interest, encouragement, and support — it really does mean the world.

The paddle board is rated for 100kg 🙈 more like a stand up u-boat with me and William on board. He definitely liked the sit on top kayak though.
