🚗⚠️ New tougher penalties for motoring offences could be introduced under government plans being considered as part of a wider Road Safety Strategy review.

The Department for Transport is reportedly looking at stricter sanctions for a range of offences, including driving without a valid MOT, uninsured driving, vehicles with untraceable owners, and the use of cloned or fake number plates. 📋

The proposals come amid concerns from police and road safety groups that some offences do not currently carry enough consequences, such as penalty points or vehicle seizure powers.

Officials say the aim is to reduce road deaths and serious injuries, with 1,602 fatalities recorded on UK roads in 2024 — alongside nearly 28,000 serious injuries. 🚓

Ministers say stronger enforcement is needed as progress on road safety has stalled since 2010, with consultations exploring a wider package of measures including drink and drug driving laws, medical fitness to drive, and seatbelt compliance.

The final decisions will follow the consultation process, which has now closed. 📊
