One of the most common questions we get as driving instructors is:
👉 "What Show Me, Tell Me questions will they ask?"
👉 "What manoeuvre will I get on my test?"

The honest answer is simple:

It could be any of them!

That's exactly why we make sure learners are fully prepared for all of the Show Me, Tell Me questions and every manoeuvre that could be asked during the practical test.

Many learners hope to predict what will come up on the day, but driving tests are designed to assess your overall ability, not just one specific skill. Being prepared for everything helps build confidence and means there are no surprises.
My understanding is that examiners do not have a set list stating which manoeuvre must be carried out on each individual test. Instead, over time they aim to ensure that all manoeuvres are used across their tests as fairly as possible.

It's also worth remembering that approximately 1 in 7 candidates will be asked to carry out a Controlled Stop (Emergency Stop) during their test, so that's another exercise you should be ready for.

often receive calls from learners saying:

"Hi, my driving test is next week, and I need someone to teach me the test routes."
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about the driving test.

While there are some commonly used routes around a test centre, passing the driving test is not about memorising routes. The examiner is assessing your ability to drive safely, independently, and make good decisions in a variety of road and traffic conditions.

With the use of sat Nav is more common on many driving tests, which means there may be some fixed routes used by a test centre. However, the independent driving section is not always just sat nav-based, if at all. You may be asked to follow directions from the examiner or follow road signs to a particular destination instead.

Driving tests are designed to cover a range of different road types and driving situations. During your test, you could be taken through:

✅ Town and city roads
✅ Residential housing estates
✅ Country and rural roads
✅ Dual carriageways and faster roads
✅ Junctions, roundabouts and complex traffic systems

It's also worth remembering that test routes are both fixed and flexible.
The route chosen on the day by the examiners can be influenced by factors such as the time of day, traffic levels, road closures, roadworks, local events, and other temporary conditions. Examiners have been adapting routes for several years to ensure the test can still be conducted safely and fairly. For example, they may alter part of a route to avoid roadworks or unexpected congestion.

As instructors, we will naturally use roads and areas that are commonly included in driving tests, helping you gain experience of the types of situations you are likely to encounter. However, the focus should always be on learning to drive safely and competently, not on learning a specific route.

In all honesty, the chances of getting the exact route you've just practiced are quite low. What will make the difference on test day is being able to deal confidently with whatever roads, traffic conditions and challenges the examiner presents.

If your test is only a few days or a weeks away, the priority should be refining your driving skills, addressing any recurring faults, and becoming fully test-ready.

Remember: you don't pass your driving test because you know the route. You pass because you can drive safely, confidently, and independently wherever the route takes you. 🚗✅
